Advanced Driving course (road not rail)

Hi all, just wondered if anyone's done the Advanced Driving course and if so whether it's worth it.

I did it immediately after passing my test, decades ago. No longer a member, but only you can decide if its worth it.

Go for an assessment drive and see what feedback you get.

The whole purpose of it is about defensive driving, which some think means driving like Miss Daisy. It doesn't, it means thinking about your driving and taking advantage of situations to make progess.

It also teaches you to avoid getting into situations which may result in an insurance claim!

I was lucky in that a friend of my father was a police driver and he took me out after i passed my test. He taught me a few things about their driving techniques that have served me well.

What would you want to achieve from it? I have it so I can pelt a truck on blue lights on the other side of the road, driving at others cars en route to a call.

I think advanced driving is whatever you want to make from out of it, but all it teaches is a common sense, safe and calm approach to driving; I assume you have this already if you are considering one.

Doesn't appear to lower your insurance either!

I've done it for car and motorbike and would say that yes, it's definitely worth it. I haven't kept up the membership (not quite my thing) but certain things I was taught have stayed with me over the last 20 years.

Such as road positioning, observation, forward thinking, anticipating the actions of others and driving calmly and assertively.

If every driver/rider did this there would be far fewer road rage incidents and accidents.

Yes. Very much so. It is based on the system of car control.
