Walking through Waverley the other I was wondering if there would be a possibility of adding new platforms in the station. I'm aware that Network Rail have a long term proposal to remove the ramps from Waverley Bridge and extend platforms 13 and 18 in the West End. But I was wondering if there was a possibility of creating new platforms/lengthening platform 3 in the East End where the ScotRail Operations Depot currently stands (was this built on former platforms?) and other ancillary buildings in the area inside the red line I've marked?

If it is technically possible, would these additional platforms be worth spending the money and I suppose most importance, of any use to the operation of the station?

It ought to be technically feasible, but probably not necessary. There are far fewer trains going east than west, most of the ones that terminate at that end are too long for a platform in this area, and having already restored or lengthened various east-facing platforms I doubt there is much need for any more.
