Saying that though - how big is the problem as theres only a small amount of cases that we get on here and I still don't see anything in the press about it being such a sscandal so maybe its not so big a problem.

It is a problem. Before I got my "special pen" I ruined a ticket trying to use biro. Kind of defeats the point of carnets, if one has to be thrown away.

And on SBB, where they've had these for years (using stamping machines) they will give you a substitute ticket if you muck up and go to a ticket office to report it.

I meant the write on ticket aspect. Just use scratchcards or something similar to the boxes or even just have the date box on the back!!

SPT Daytripper Scratchcard works well.

No chance of illicit reuse at all. The only downside is they don't operate the barriers which could be a problem on an intensive commuter TOC but gateline staff could presumably cope so long as it was only a relatively small proportion of commuters using it.

I hope that when GTR introduces its smartcard it will offer things like carnet discounts from day one, and won't be a gradual introduction following some sort of trial.

It seems that when it comes to smartcards on the railway, everything moves at a glacial pace.

Automatic discounts are probably the way forward. No need to purchase carnet tickets and predict your usage needs, as your usage can be monitored and discounts/caps applied automatically. But that will probably be years away!

A bar code under the date would suffice or qr code to present to the barrier.
