Thanks everyone for your help. I’ve decided not to appeal as I think it will be a stressful process and it sounds like I don’t have a strong enough case in their eyes.
This is understandable but you might like to know that you can still appeal after paying, and if the appeal is successful you’ll be refunded.

You have nothing to lose by appealing, and we can help you write it. The first and second appeals probably won’t be successful, but the third is looked at by an independent panel and is more likely to be looked at properly. Each one should only take a few minutes as you’d just be resubmitting the same appeal wording each time.

I personally think that the op should still appeal. Just because they have now paid does not mean they can not still appeal. A simple appeal text of I'm appealing the penalty fsre as it was not issued in line with the regulations. It was for £x when at that time of day why first should have been £y should suffice.

Would it be too much to ask that they have all read and digested the Penalty Fare regulations and been through various appeal situations so they don't make errors like the one suggested may have happened on this thread? They shouldn't be issuing penalties that are unenforceable because they don't meet the basic requirements of the regulations. Then the appeals system could focus on doing what it was set up to do - decide if the passenger was genuinely likely to have got on the wrong train by mistake by taking advantage of additional information not available to the inspector on board.
It would be too much to ask of me, yes

I have passed on various snippets to several of the RPSMs over the past 12 months, especially regarding PF issuing for incorrect reasons etc. I imagine it falls of deaf ears, though it does seem like the depth of knowledge isn't what it should be.

You'll be seeing them a lot more going forward.

The entire MK Revenue team is out on the network daily, mostly on Euston/MKC-Northampton (1Yxx) or Euston-Crewe (1Uxx). There are 40-45 of them now and are being tasked to be mostly onboard specific services through the next few months.

Going a bit odd topic here I know, but it's the Cross City where WMT need to focus the revenue protection teams, the level of open fare evasion is becoming a bit of a kick in the teath to those of us who do pay.
