Talking of MediaCity, I was travelling out there last week, and fully expected to have to walk as I was travelling at 6pm and the website claimed it was only interpeak. However, I get to Piccadilly and the first tram in is to MediaCity! Even the posters on the Eccles branch still say it only runs 10-4. Was I just lucky?

From last week there has been an extra picc - media city service in place. The eccles trams seem to be timed to leave picc 5 minutes later to accomodate this

Who'd want to? I don't think any BBC staff will be living in that part of Salford...

I don't know if they'll be running via Media City again to get to Eccles, but to be honest, I don't see the point as it's a handy terminating point for the inner sections of that line, and it's still quicker to get to Eccles from Manchester by Bus.

It is fair to say relatively few people would travel from Eccles to the Media City itself, but the Lowry Outlet Mall, Arts Centre and Water Sports Centre is within walking distance of Media City and is served only by an hourly bus (actually, minibus would be a better description) that runs from Eccles via Salford Precinct (near Salford Crescent) and Ordsall Lane/Regent Road, takes best part of an hour to make the trip and only runs 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday (no service Sunday).

Last month, I picked up copy of "MIDDLETON TRAMWAYS" by A.K.Kirby, published in October 1976. The publishers name is Manchester Transport Museum Society with an address in Castleton,Rochdale. There are numerous black and white photogaphic images in the book.At the end are inserted route maps, one of which is called "Through Routes--Middleton to Manchester 1930".

The book covers the whole operation from 1902 to 1925 until municipal operation commenced. There are detailed appendeces on Fares and Tickets, Company Rolling Stock and Financial Matters.

Im a volunteer with the Manchester Transport Museum Society (MTMS) and im sure i could find that somewhere.

I have sent an e-mail to the Manchester Museum of Transport to see if their archive section can come up with any news on this.

I have since been told that it was more like the period 1958 to 1962 when discussion took place INFORMALLY about this project, but my contact is now well into his 90's.

I will post any news if I receive it.

I have today received an e-mail from George Turnbull, Head of Collections Management, Greater Manchester Museum of Transport, in answer to my e-mail to the museum in response to my query on proposals many years ago to build a light rapid transit system from Middleton to Manchester Airport.

He said that in their archive collection, they have a three volume "Manchester Rapid Transit Study" commissioned jointly by Manchester Corporation, the Ministry of Transport and British Railways, produced by
consulting engineers de Leuw Cather and Partners in asociation with Hennessey, Chadwick Oh Eocha and Partners (these two companies merged during the consulation time). Details as below:-
Volume 1: Report of the Working Party (66 pages). September 1967
Volume 2: Study of Rapid Transit Systems and Concepts (232 pages) ditto
Volume 3: The First Prority (Reports of the Working Party) (112 pages) 1968

He goes on to say that all three volumes are illustrated and contain maps and that at that time, there were press reports in local papers and in the trade papers, but that these three voumes are the substantive works.

These three volumes are now long out of print and he states that he has not seen copies other than theirs, except in the Manchester Central Library. He suggests that people wishing to see these volumes should make contact with the Manchester Central Library.

Well, at least I have come up with an answer as to the "ideas" forerunner of a modern light transport system over 50 years ago in Manchester. I hope that anyone wanting to take research further should follow the recommendations.

Arriva North-West run their number 69 bus from Eccles to Stretford which offers connections with the Metrolink stations at:-
Eccles
Weaste
Langworthy
Broadway
Media City
Harbour City
Anchorage
Salford Quays
Exchange Quay
Trafford Bar
Stretford

It runs from Monday to Saturday between 0900 to 1800 from Eccles and from 0912 to 1812 from Stretford. WARNING : Not all services are run as complete routes. Anyone interested should obtain this timetable from the travel centres.
