802014 Running with Coupler hatch open

Waiting for a train at Filton Abbey Wood and I just saw 802014 running at I assume line speed with the hatch open.

Is this unusual? It was late out of PAD so I assume there was an issue and the driver decided to continue. Quite the weird spot for me!

Relatively common on the 5 car sets, especially recently. I think 802019 was like this last week too. No restrictions involved can run normal line speed, only affects the appearance of the train really.

Yesterday I saw 802004 and another set connected with both ends open

I guess the cover is there to hide it and make the body look more attractive, unless there is a more important reason?

I'm guessing there's an advantage to a pigeon hitting the cover than risking a perfect shot on the connector?

Probably an aerodynamic issue at full speed? I guess that's unimportant though.

Yes, aerodynamics, aesthetics, and not letting debris, snow, or formerly-flying creatures foul the coupler are the primary reasons.
