Hi, my friend recently sent me this photo of 387220.
What's it happening to it, is it being refurbished or scrapped or something else?

Thanks for any help provided.

Where was the picture taken? That may give a good idea.

Most likely just a referbishment of scheduled maintenance.

As it’s a GatEx unit, then I would say it’s either Selhurst, Stewart’s Lane (if the GX fleet is still maintained there) or Hornsey.

It certainly wouldn’t be scrapped, but likely for refurbishment.

I assume the friend isn’t the one who took the picture? As you’d think they might have an idea given the pic is taken from inside the stripped down unit (well driving vehicle at least).

377/4s are done and some 377/1s have been refurbed...
My guess is this 387 needed a bit more work than normal to bring it up to spec for PA.

That doesn't really look stripped. They have just taken the seats out and removed the carpet. It could be that that is simply the most efficient way of replacing the carpet after damage (like how you put chairs on the table at school to help the cleaners).

(Incidentally it's really Public Address (System) rather than Passenger Announcements, although the latter describes it pretty well in layman's terms!)
Or PIS (Passenger Information System)?

PA is a general term used outside of trains used to refer to an audio announcement system. PIS is rail specific and includes the screens inside the train as well, CIS (Customer Information System) is the station equivalent.
