Tomorrow my good lady and I will be "popping up" to Glasgow for a couple of hours.

Any recommendations on what to do once we're there?

We will get there at 1pm and leave at 3.40pm, although there is a train at 4.40pm which we could use to change to the last train back from Carlisle to Leeds. Does anyone know if the 1640 Glasgow Central-London Euston is generally a reliable, punctual train?

I also want to include a quick drink at a traditional Scottish pub somewhere near Central Station. Any good suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Near Central Station the Pot Still on Hope Street might be the best Whiskey pub in the world, The Horseshoe on Renfield Lane is good too, more of a family pub though.

The Scotia Bar, a short walk along the bank of the Clyde, on Stockwell Street, is very traditional.

In 2 hours you could get to Kelvingrove Gallery & Museum, which I strongly recommend visiting as a building as much as for its contents (but you won't have time for that and a pub!).

Not traditional or quiet but there is the Solid Rock opposite the station on IIRC Hope Street. Riverside Museum is interesting too - though I tend to have about 10 hours on my day trips (get in 8am, fly out 9pm)

Yes. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/glasgow/kelvingrove/index.html
There is a depature from Central to Dumfries at 13.18 calling at Partick and you can either walk to Kelvingrove Park and Museum from there in about 15-20 minutes passing Byres Road (a student haunt) and a few bars or catch a bus along the Dumbarton Road - not much quicker but will save your legs.

Enjoy:)

If it's not raining or cold (both unlikely ), you could hop on a City Sightseeing Tour which will give you a flavour of the sights and attractions on offer along with a bit of the history.

How about a visit to the Transport museum, or a ride around the clockwork orange (Underground Circle Line Railway) and visit the willow tea rooms near central station, plus the old Glasgow school museum.
