158881 is Staying unitill 158882 or another one comes back as 158882 has to go to WABTEC 1st to undergo Repairs then 158881 will go in and 158882 will come back or as said another one will come down on loan.

Frankly id iwas SWT i wouldn't send anymore units on loan to EMT considering the State 158881 and 882 are in.

You've got to remember that both companies are run by Stagecoach. So in effect, it's like Stagecoach Preston lending Stagecoach Lancaster a bus.

But with trains obviously.

travelled from Sheffield to Nottingham on 158783 last night (one of the few services to run diverted via Barrow Hill and Derby on a 158 ) and I will go back on some of my comments, as in some of the airline seats, the legroom is very good, but the seats are quite frankly **** and as hard as rock! The tables are definately lower, and I went to use the loo but already the doors are broken, it got stuck half way closed! Unfortunately it was trashed and there's already chewing gum on the carpet and seat-back trays

Its more a case of lack of care and attention. Sets should be clean when leaving the depot. Obviously they are not!

Thing is though, chewing gum in the carpet is very hard to get out when fresh, nearly impossible when worn in so not much can be done unless EMT want to re-carpet their trains every time they go in for a check.

When it was out on its last run of the day with hardly an turnaround time at each end, its bound to have rubbish. The unit had worked the 05xx Nottingham - Liverpoool, this was at 1942.

Yeah this is bound to be an issue with low turnaround times. It's a pitty there can't be one long break (an hour or less) for each train at some time between 11am and 3pm.

Have those Northern 153s made the journey across?

I'd like to see these added to the 158 sets to strengthen them, as Northern did with theirs.

not really possible because there's now 44 diagrams and 45 units to cover them

And Loader, it's got nothing to do with here, it happens everywhere unfortunately. Whenever I go to London pretty much all the trains (especially underground trains, the A60 stock especially) they look dreadful.

the units I saw on the Liverpool services yesterday were 156403, 158783, 158813 and 158882, rather odd mix. 156403 looked like it was on fire at Sheffield, smoke was pouring out the bottom of it!

Probably just the affter burner as was ok when i was onit at 19.05 from WID-LLST and 19.52 LLST-WAC.

I must say EMTs 156s are certanlry a vast improvment on most of there 158s thogh in need of a refresh.

With regards to the cleaning and reval of chewing gum it was announced on EMTs web site thaqt they have bought a new cleaning machine for carpets and seats that removes Chewing Gum ,Tar and other tuff stains.

I think Nottingham Depot have a bit of an issue with cleaning trains hence the resons why the ex CT one sare in such a mess.

Gents.........users....Travellers.......

The Tables on the refurbished Class 158 are exactly the same height to table top as previous. The thing that has changed is the depth of the table rim which is now 50mm in line with RGS due to crashworthiness.

Comapred to the ones on the alpha line 158s they are slighly Lower but comapred to the ex TPE ones they are the same height just that the depth of the edge table is thicker as said above but also the tables ar not as wide as previos that i personaly noticed and have no fancy curve in them just plain and simple.

Hi there,

new to this web site and very interested in the threads that have been put up so far. I realise it is a bit late on my part.

On a seperate discussion a few of us had and idea about the overcrowding problem. EMT Mainline trains aren't up to the standards they used to be whilst under MML. We discussed maybe changing the timetable back and making several improvments accross the network.

Corby has to be served by a London Service. So the idea I had was to restore the timetable to the old way 4 Meridians at intermediate stations an hour (2north 2 south) and add a further service into the mix. Corby - London St Pancras. But rather than use a Meridian transfer 3 or maybe 4 class 158's over to the MML part of the route. When Corby opened East Midlands Trains aquired 4 4car Meridians from Hull trains. If they transfered say 4 158's over to the mainline then the 4 extra class 222's could be put into service on the Norwich - Liverpool services which would increase capacity. Would have to be 158's as the top speed is needed on the MainLine and also the livery is painted in EMT MainLine.

Just a thought really which I think will work.

It's been thought of before and is unlikely to ever happen.

I think what people forget is that the Corby services don't just serve Corby, they serve the southern part of the Midland Mainline. That is a huge amount of commuter traffic, especially at peak times. It has its own overcrowding problems.

If you have not been, try getting on a peak train from Bedford or Luton to sample the overcrowding yourself.

would halving the corby-london service and replacing the lost london services with a kettering-corby-oakham-melton mowbray-nottingham service with 158s, releasing half the meridians used to norwich-l'pool services. I'm sure there are some flaws in that idea but oh well...

The RUS for the East Midlands said that even if the Meridians are lengthened, overcrowding would still occur south of Bedford and that passengers should be prepared to use trains either side of the one they're using...sounds bloody arrogant.

No it's not arrogant.

It's basically stating that you should spread your journeys more.

If companies used a bit of common sense & spread their employees days out (a semi shift system) then you wouldn't suffer anywhere near the amount of overcrowding & traffic congestion.

That's just the kind of joined up thinging companies and government bodies in the uk refuse to have.

If someone worked say 9 to 5. If their day was offset by say 3 hours, not only would it mean less crowded journeys but cheaper fares for the person (off peak vs anytime).

The 158s polish up really well when cleaned and refurbished!

But they don't work nearly as well as they did, and they didn't work that well before!

Sounds like common sense. Punters south of Bedford have a frequent FCC service to choose from as well as EMT, and so can hardly complain.

Corby has to be served by a London Service.

IIRR it's part of the franchise commitment to proide Corby with a service.
Therefore it doesn't have to be a direct London service, and a Corby-Kettering shuttle would satisfy the requirements nicely.
