Steam locomotive starts new chapter on the coast​

An industrial steam engine found in a convent has started a new chapter on the coast.

The 1929 locomotive, called "Newstead", was found in a Carmelite convent near Ware, Hertfordshire, in 2016.

It re-entered service at the North Norfolk Railway in Sheringham on Saturday after a nine-year refurbishment.

The locomotive was built in 1929 by the Hunslet Engine Company as a 16 inch cylinder 0-6-0 saddle tank. It was given the name 'Newstead'.

It spent most of its working life based at South Kirkby after being bought by South Kirkby, Featherstone and Hemsworth Colliery. They had already bought two others of the class including Fitzwilliam, the pioneer of the Hunslet standard design.

The loco ended its working life at NCB Woolley Colliery.

Certainly looks more polished now than it did back in June 1971.
