The Portsmouth - Cardiff route is worked by the (blue) FGW 158 sets, usually three car units of which three are stabled at Fratton overnight. Two are for the first two Cardiff runs and one works to Brighton at roughly 7.00 AM before heading for Great Malvern (9.00 AM from Brighton). There may rarely be a 150 on shed deputising for an unavailable 158 set, usually this will go on the Brighton run. SWT also stable 158/159 sets at Fratton, I'd have to be honest and say I'm not entirely certain of where they go, I would think they probably visit Fratton for cleaning/fuelling before heading off towards Romsey/Eastleigh/Chandlers Ford but as I say I'm not certain. Any SWT staff who can comment?!

I believe a few 158/9s are used on Pompey-So'ton shuttles during the peaks as the 450s are needed to run to and from London.

I often see a 158 or 159 on Pompey - Soton shuttles in the afternoon, but instead of forming the return, they quite often attach to the Romsey - Salisbury 158 at Southampton and run on to Salisbury in formation, with the 158 leading as it gets in to Southampton first.

The one that arrives into Southampton at 0938 is a 159 IIRC

2 x 158s stable at Fratton weekdays, one runs ECS to Totton for the 0612 to Romsey then does normal 'Salisbury 6' services. The other runs to Eastleigh ECS and returns as the 0702 to Portsmouth Harbour.

There's also 2 x 159 stable at Fratton and they form the 0500 Ports Hbr to Basingstoke.

The current diagrams only have one 'attach' at Southampton Central over the course of a normal day, the 1044 to Salisbury is the normal 1038 with a 159 attached which has just done a single Southampton to Portsmouth Harbour and return, they run combined to get the 159 back to Salisbury, it would otherwise have to run ECS. Every other Portsmouth - Southampton stopper is a 450. The only time it has been different recently is when the snow timetable was in force...

1038 arrival, I reckon?

The Lymington 158 arrives empties from Salisbury on a monday and returns empty to Southampton on a friday night before a quick run to Salisbury via Romsey.

There is also a 1624 Basingstoke-Portsmouth but that is usually a 159, the same unit from the morning Pompey-Southampton service which then spends several hours stabled in the down sidings at Basingstoke.

I have just seen a 158 leading another, or a 159, passing Millbrook at around 10.50, heading on the Down Salisbury '6' towards Redbridge Junction.

That's the one I mentioned in post #8.

I thought I'd add this list I came up with a year or so back, I think it is still valid. It shows all the odd DMU passenger services in the South Hants area; but NOT the associated ECS moves or the Salisbury - Romseys, and Lymingtons, as they are all day services on weekdays.

0500 Portsmouth Hbr - Basingstoke 6.159
0542 Southampton - Eastleigh 6.159
0655 Basingstoke - Southampton Ctrl 3.159
0702 Eastleigh -Portsmouth Hbr 2.158
0751 Southampton Ctrl - Portsmouth Hbr 3.159
0805 Portsmouth Hbr - Basingstoke 2.158
0933 Portsmouth Hbr - Southampton Ctrl 3.159
1624 Basingstoke - Portsmouth Hbr 6.159
1638 Winchester - Totton 2.158
1703 Portsmouth Hbr - Fareham 2.158
1724 Basingstoke - Southampton Ctrl 3.159
1817 Southampton Ctrl - Winchester 2.158
1905 Winchester - Southampton Ctrl 2.158
0030 Eastleigh - Portsmouth Hbr 2 158

As a matter of interest what happens to the 1638 Winchester - Totton? Returns ECS?

As I may have pointed out before, at least the Totton terminator actually needs to be a DMU - all the other services could be EMUs in an ideal world.

No, the 16:24 Basingstoke - Portsmouth and 17:24 Basingstoke - Southampton are formed from the 6-car 159 that runs ECS from Waterloo, getting into Basingstoke about 08:10.

They've previously worked a Salisbury - Waterloo service, and the Down service they would have worked is instead worked by the 6-car 159 that's arrives at Waterloo as the 06:42 Basingstoke - Waterloo (which in turn is formed off the stock of the 05:00 Portsmouth - Basingstoke).

That is correct.

There is usually 2x3 159 in the East sidings and a 2 158 in Barton Mill most of the day but they intermingle with Waterloo and Salisbury routes in order to rotate stock correctly.

Excuse my ignorance but why ECS? Would it not have been better to run in service and relieve the other servioces?

I used to occasionally catch a 2x3 159 from Southampton Central to Waterloo late morning. It made a change from the usual 442. This would have been 1995/6.

Yes, there used to be a handful of Waterloo - Salisbury (or vice versa) via Southampton services, but they got chopped around 2001 - 2002, when the WOE went half hourly for most of the day.

The Totton terminator does need to be a 158, but it only really runs to Totton to avoid having the platforms blocked at Southampton, especially as it is only 10 minutes behind another service to Totton. I think the call may actually be additional to the SLC requirement.
