08:47 Standard Premium Liverpool to Euston

Going to London today travelling on Standard Premium for the first time as I usually travel First Class until the price went up and the service went down.

Observed First Class has about 9 people altogether crammed into the top 2 coaches (1 and half coach actually) while Standard Premium is spread out lightly occupied and standard class is fairly busy.

Looks like they want to kill first class by pricing it out.

Brought my own food and drinks, quiet journey so far, not so keen on the old First Class price being applied to Standard Premium.

Will try LNWR next time to London to compare if its worth the price v time value for money.

General advice for LNWR is to watch out for cancellations at the moment and don’t pay extra for First Class, it’s not worth it, but it will be my mode of choice in future for sure. Avanti has lost my custom.

First Class on LNR is only worth it if you get a 350/2 and it's busy (/2s are OK if nobody sits next to you). On /1s, /3s and /4s, the seat comfort is to most people inferior to Standard, and you can get better legroom in Standard than First by choosing a table or a seat in the end sections, most notably the extra-legroom table at the cab end which is actually First Class on 360s.

As for Avanti I hope they do move to First Class which is just an upgraded seat at a more reasonable price rather than the incredibly expensive full service approach. I could be swayed by free tea, coffee and mineral water as it costs next to nothing to provide, but not more than that.

I've just come back from a trip in London and travelled down from Crewe on LNWR.
When I went to buy the ticket the first class was cheaper than the standard. I booked around a month previously.
Lucky, or is this something that pops up every now and then.

It sometimes happens when lower tiers of Standard sell out before First, but I can't help but giggle because it accurately reflects the difference between the classes :)

You can of course buy a First Class ticket and sit in Standard.

Just got back on the 15:07 Euston to Liverpool today, very quiet standard premium, my carriage had 9 people in it, had my pick of seats, perfect.

Again brought my own food and drinks, drank coffee in Euston Nero in lieu of first class lounge, got home in good time after arriving and 15 minutes later got the fast train back to my station.

Will be weighing up using LNER for my next trip back to London.
