The problem has been that there's not enough space on the current ticket layout to fit reservation information on, so it has to go on a separate coupon.

In the mid 2000s they printed these things on the long wide tickets, about the same size as an airline boarding pass. I have no idea why these tickets were withdrawn, other than the fact the ticket barriers couldn't read them.

Given my latest EC advance tickets came with a QR code printed on them, I don't see why this should remain the case.

Along with not working barriers, I believe that there were complaints they were too big to fit in wallets. I still see the odd one.

I found the only place I was issued with the large airline style tickets was from my local travel agent when buying advances, at the same time if booking an advance through a railway office they were provided on orange stock.

GNER used to print the airline style tickets for advances bought online as, initially, did NXEC.

They did them at stations too; at least at Durham, anyway.
