I think p4 is for terminating from south, and p5 for through northbound services (excluding to Parkway)
4 would turn any of:
1tph fast Padd
2tph slow Padd (if wired)
0.5-1tph Bristol
Shuttles from South
The first (the fast) is likely to go onwards one day and thus likely to flow through P5...
It’s true that due to the squished pattern, the semi fasts don’t offer huge time savings. It’s psychological, and plain old bums on seats.
If a set of services were fast from OOC to Heathrow Central and West Drayton or Slough, that would definitely negate the need for semi Slough calls etc -...
So additional freight tracks rather than fast (bypass tunnel) ones? I think it’d be very difficult between Ealing Bdy and Southall.
Surely a simple no tunnel, uniform pattern / profile pair of tracks would be far cleaner, and cheaper?
I’d go to at least after Slough so you could rework that...
This isn't that different to today in principle - you probably want Andover calls which has hit 1m users but non-stop Waterloo to Andover might be interesting.
Your hourly Basingstoke - Salisbury with extensions, should reasonably start at Reading - bringing all that that does.
Andover would...
Perhaps not, but with sometimes 2 fasts per hour (and calls for more eg WRATH / Paddington in the long term, or more local service) - - - - as well as 2tph stoppers (which could be sped up and have quicker working patterns - also with better acceleration) - it could make a difference to the...
Looking at Hull Trains - it did two things:
Built a long-term demand for Hull-London rail travel (as well as Selby/Brough) - which has been sustained, organic and did not wildly abstract what was a token 1 up, 1 down business service. It's hard to deny that, and they used speed appropriate...
On this "1000 cuts" project, it would not surprise me one bit.
All while the new rail services keep coming... agree fully that it needs a master plan - both sides, platform/line works, wires, etc - whatever is chosen, but done cohesive and by the same stakeholders. It doesn't have to be a...
I support the London-Didcot semi EMU going back to Oxford and terminating there, in an electrified P4. That should not be a debate, it's correcting what has become a long term triage.
But if so, I would not thread it into any of the Banbury shuttle / Stratford / Moor St options. I would leave...
Also west of Salisbury, trains stop a lot. West of Basingstoke even. So the savings may not be worth it, and you might be better starting with raising the lower speeds up. But yes a service running non-stop Basingstoke-Salisbury for instance, might benefit from a faster section (and more trains...
No current Hayes terminators, that I recall. There is the bay, and it was planned way back, but not currently. Veruy curious to see Acton ML in future ORR figures as the amount of development continues massively, especially north of the station and around the A40.
This should be the Oxford-Didcot shuttle (which is sometimes to Banbury) - it could become the Stratford/Moor St, for instance - if Cowley will only ever be the Marylebone/2tph, and EWR needs to be more uniform and shuttle-like, in the bay/s.
Freight does have a few different locations though, like Colnbrook.
Fast tunnel is cleanest and simplest, with no stations and no Heathrow. Portals just west of Maidenhead.
Twyford station itself would need a little work but broadly you can six track on last easily after Maidenhead. Pointless...
Mk4 are not all the services, and having 5 car Voyagers consistently would be an increase on today. Would also be an improvement for Coast/Liverpool services.
EWR - I don't believe there are enough 196s to double up units, so yes, it is not open yet but it will quickly exceed a 2 car 196 - so...
This is a highly quaint, and archaic practice and I don't think anyone gets on a train these days without knowing where to get off, or looks out of the window to ascertain that - or indeed, whether a smaller station is the railhead for a larger place. Almost everyone is looking at some form of...
The fasts make these calls too now, since Slough was dropped - so this would be a third.
edit to say - could P4 have some permissive working for shorter trains? Bristol 5 car 800 at A-end, Banbury (Stratford) shuttles at B-end?
Agree that a better 'master' entrance and station facilities (with the various works rumoured for it) - would be a better investment, once P5 is operational.
I would think that extending the Oxford fast (current terminator) to Banbury would be better than the semi-fast EMUs. And you could do that today. Hanborough was another option (if wired) - or a second to at least Worcester, but I don't know if that is happening.
Either way, it would clear P4...
So express tunnels would be before / not include OOC? As two inter city stops before Reading would be nuts, but it will be a massive hub by then so some connections (notably HS2) would be missed. And even with one call at Heathrow, journey times would be back towards 30 mins on London-Reading...
