Trivia: Unfulfilled or unsuccessful franchise bid promises

National Express East Coast franchise included a requirement for two-hourly services to Lincoln, to start in 2010. NXEC then decided the franchise was uneconomic and handed the keys back. DOR took it over but then moved the goalposts and decided that the services didn't need to be run anyway -...

    Class 120 DMUs

Swindon already had the tooling for those cabs, as they were identical with those for the non-gangwayed end of the InterCity units (Class 126 and the 79xxx units that preceded them), the first of which were built in August 1956 (SC79098/99). The original 1954-design upright Derby cab was...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Yes, it does. It was what happens in Scotland I was asking about 1789466483 Thankyou . And presumably vice versa - the loco that did the ECS into Glasgow central then trundles over to Edinburgh to take the Highlander south? Now you mention it, wasn't there a problem last week when an early...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Is it only six 92s? Four for the main haul (up/down Highlander/ Lowlander) One for the Edinburgh portion Two for ECS at Wembley/Euston and Polmadie/Glasgow Or can one loco do the Highlander and either the Glasgow ECS or the Edinburgh?

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

Originally went all the way to Verney Junction - from 1906 a GCR/Met Joint Committee was responsible between Harrow and Quainton Road. LT was resposnible for maintenence as far as Aylesbury (exclusive) and when the Joint Committee was abolished in 1950 this became the LT/BR boundary - cut back...

    Caledonian Sleeper

The Highlander certainly does - you need to be quick to get a place. The Lowlander not so much, because you only spend about eight hours on the train anyway, most people want to go straight to bed. When I used the Lowlander last month, I think there were no more than four other people in the lounge.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

That's only six - I think you missed 701016 as that also doesn't show up on RTT (it's been missing for three weeks now). However 701017 came out to play later.

    Class 120 DMUs

One of them had the distinction of being the very last train into Lincoln St Marks, on 11th May 1985. I was there, but not on it - I was on the first train over the new spur (an HST) the next afternoon though.

    Caledonian Sleeper

As a frequent user of the sleeper, I have never been seriiusly delayed. There have been issues with the standard of service - notably being refused access to the lounge at Inverness on several occasions because it was full, and one (some years ago now) when my wife, on crutches, was told she...

    Class 120 DMUs

I remeber them replacing 104s on the Lincoln- Derby route when it was extended to Crewe in the mid-1970s. More comfortable (for what was a nearly 4 hour journey of only 100 miles!) but a much more restricted view out the front! Reading the link Belfastmarty priovided it seems their WR...

Hertford Loop issues 14/9 (and Gordon Hill question)

I don't know if the move is allowed in passenger service over a shunt signal, but if it isn't, it could run ECS to Enfield Chase and enter passenger service there (albeit to the annoyance of any intending passengers at Gordon Hill)

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

I don't think there was. The Met never ran any tender locomotives so had no need for turntables

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

I have also been on rounders that have got confused about how far along their route they have got - for example an up service leaving Platform 10 at Clapham Junction saying the next station is Wandsworth Town. The best one was being warned to "mind the gap" when the train was held at singals at...

    Caledonian Sleeper

They don't do announcements over the loudspeakers en route as it wuold wake everyone up. If you are alighting at an intermediate station you will be woken by a knock on the door about 30 minutes before (or earlier if you have asked for an earlier breakfast)

Severn Valley Railway Home Fleet Diesel Gala - 50xxx

Recent arrival D2996 was supposed to be working at the Spring Gala, but wasn't ready in time. No mention of it at this event.

Just been through RTT and doesn't appear that 92020 has been used, at least not at the London end, all week. (Checked all arrivals, departures and ECS workings)

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Conversely, some passengers get concerned when the ultimate desination changes en route - "I was on a Strawberry Hill train, but now it says it's going to Richmond - has it been diverted?" 1789324066 Shown on RTT as back in service today, Diagram starting 2c17 0809 Waterloo to Staines...

Itw as the bay at Chalfont that could only take four cars. Chesham could always take eight.

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

They may have been completed on his watch, but he can't be given the credit for them. Beeching became Chairman, succeeding Sir Brian Robertson, in March 1961, six months after electrification to Amersham was completed. And as its name suggests, the A60 stock was already being built, albeit it...

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

The Chesham branch can only manage a very limited service, much less than usagec further south required. Presumably Amersham was chosen as the most convenient point to terminate the rest of the electric services. Of course, in 1960 it was still expected that trains going beyond Amersham would be...
