Scotland Grand Tour - is it actually viable?

It's very scenic, arguably the best bit - Helensburgh to FW and the Kyle are not too shabby either though. On my first attempt I ended up bailing at FW and getting the City Link to Kyle as the guard announced on that the ferry was cancelled when we were crossing Rannoch Moor. For someone who's...

Scotland Grand Tour - is it actually viable?

I've tried to the last two years running but have failed both times. Thread about it here Kyle of Lochalsh To Mallaig via Skye | RailUK Forums The first time the ferry to Armadale wasn't cancelled because of the weather. This year my train was late into Inverness and they didn't hold the train...

    European timetables 2027

Does anyone know when the new DB timetable is published? Looking at travelling in mid-January but nothing is available after the beginning of December.

    Staff using phones

Nothing wrong with it, they've got nothing to do but can't leave their post. I think there's a bit of ageism/snobbery on this thread - if they were reading a book or doing the times crossword maybe people would be less moany? So long as they put it down straight away and deal with the customer...

    Staff using phones

If a fare dodger is going to push through or vault the barriers, the staff member is got going to risk getting assaulted attempting to apprehend them. The fact that they are looking at ticktocks on their blower is neither here nor there, the determined fare dodger will do it regardless.

Trivia. Stations which are busier at the weekends than in the week.

After our home game against Arsenal a week on Saturday we won't have another Saturday home until the 2nd of January against Man Utd (which might move as well). You're lucky if you get more than half your games on Saturday (let alone 3pm) in the Premier League. As has already been said there is a...

    Round UK ‘circumnavigation’ by train

The 1445 from Southampton goes to Brighton, no need to change at Havant (not much there really). (edited) Also you buy a Southern DaySave ticket that will cover you all the way from Southampton to Ashford for £26 which would save you a fiver if you decide against the ALR.

    Station pilots

One wonders how much work it actually had in the ten years after the 4CIGs went in 2005, maybe the depot just didn't want to lose it's pet which is fair enough :)

    Station pilots

Lucky more like, my memory is usually terrible! :) What was the last livery it carried there - dark green or BR blue maybe? Cedric rings a bell, think it was named Cedric Wares - always thought it could be a joke on "where's Cedric" (no disrespect to the man himself whoever he was)

    Station pilots

There was an 09 at Lovers Walk for many years after privatisation but probably not seen it for at least 10 years. How much (if at all) it ventured south on pilot duties I don't know.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

Good news overall but I'd have like to see small tables added to the bays of four. Nothing huge that would slow things down, just a small shell to rest your cup/can on.

Ordering food to be delivered to trains.

Moderator note - split from: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/lumo-running-train-with-no-toilets.305567/ About 20 years ago I was in New Zealand on the train from Auckland to Wellington, somewhere a party of school children, possibly heading to/from a rugby tournament, boarded the train...

Sussex Coast Statesman 14th August 2026

The only reason it would need to go via Hove would would be to turn a kettle via the triangle, but as it was duff-hauled (apparently) it would just complicate and lengthen the journey.

Longest journey in the UK to run with stock that lacks toilet facilities

Although 377s are used now, last year there was about 60,000 journeys between "Brighton" (Brighton, Hove, Portslade) and "Portsmouth" (Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth and Southsea, Fratton).

Longest journey in the UK to run with stock that lacks toilet facilities

When the 313s were still in service Brighton-Portsmouth Harbour was over an hour and half without a bog.
