Ormskirk and Kirby are curiosities with gap in rails so entirely opposite coming from Liverpool Merseyrail.
Two examples in Scotland are 253 Borders Buses Edinburgh-Berwick with Grantshouse a cluster of houses just off A1! And the Stagecoach Western X77 at Fenwick coming on and off M77 motorway...
Stagecoach in Fife service 66 tender Glenrothes to Burnside is just bizarre. Milnarhort and Kinross offer a host of connections and amenities but of course is P&K council.
Used to operate via Falkirk High in London bound direction only, but with EGIP electrification completed it now operates via Bathgate serving additionally Glasgow Qst LowLevel.
Glasgow Queen Street to Central service 398 must be a contender hardly worth the hassle. Anyway McGills 901/906 might be considered something of an alternative.
My recommendation:
0652 Edinburgh-Carlisle 0806
0927 Carlisle-Settle 1105

(or)
0853 Edinburgh-Carlisle 1007
1049 Carlisle-Settle 1233
with Advance fare £12.50
on Saturday 14/12/19
(then)
0956 Bentham-Lancaster 1027
with Day Single fare £7.20

Just announced here at Glasgow Central that 16:42 to Paisley Canal is cancelled. Coincidentally a humble 314 is sitting at the planned platform 15 idle.. Seems to be 314205 still.

Indeed. Summer Saturday 29/6/19 at noon a northbound T4 that I used had to terminate at Storey Arms summit. Full load with free weekends extra pax and driver drove with little concern to difficult circumstances.
Stagecoach only variation with 42mile gap Wrexham-Newtown. There is service 5 Chester-Wrexham. Going south to Bristol for the Falcon and Saltash connecting bus leaving 80miles to Lands End. Use T4 Newtown-Brecon, X43 Brecon-Abergavenny, X20 Abergavenny-Newport, SEV Newport-Bristol.
Stagecoach in Perth service 70 three early morning journeys and they start at the depot. Also McGills XP23 Erskine or Inchinnan to Glasgow frequent morning fast commuter services, not sure in what way the latter is especially different to X23 as some of those journeys too omit Braehead.
On the ECML I can think of DUNBAR and DARLINGTON with platforms only on one side of the main running lines. Perhaps DONCASTER can be mentioned similar to Crewe because of Decoy avoiding lines AFIK. I think Chillingham Road T&W Metro is immediately next to ECML at Heaton TRSMD does this count?
Evening SPT subsidised service 84B Kirkintillooch-Twechar-Kilsyth-Banton finishes at Banton and must return to McColls Dumbarton depot some 30miles by road perhaps on the twisty Strathblane roads! This service typically runs empty Kilsyth-Banton so in effect is a further three miles! Been like...
