Looking at the area on a 1960s OS map, the site looks somewhat hemmed in, and there may simply have not been enough space to create an MGR loop. These need a very large chunk of land to fit in.
Run round loop-loco detaches from train and runs forward to headshunt. Points are changed and loco runs past train on adjacent line. Points are changed again, loco reverses onto rear of train.
Thanks for the replies.
As I remember it, when I first saw these trains there were no signs by the doors, and that was why I wondered what was allowed or prohibited.
This was well before the first health and safety laws of 1974.
Recently I read a crime novel set in the 1950s, where a suspect was pursued by police on an LU train. He opened the door at the end of car and the door to the next car to enter it as part of his attempt to evade them.
This reminded to me of being on such trains in the 1960s, and seeing some...
I think Agecroft was mainly/entirely goods work.
Patricroft did North Wales and Liverpool from Man Exchange (not Vic), also things like the portion to Wigan for the overnight Liv to Glasgow..
I was caught out at crewe last month, wanted a train to Chester. Departures board included a train to Shrewsbury, no interest to me. It turned out that the train was for Shrewsbury via Chester as I found out too late.
Many people define the identity of a steam loco as being in its mainframes.
Because this loco's frames were condemned as beyond repair a while ago, new frames have been obtained. Does this make 65033 a new-build replica as opposed to an an actual restoration?
To assist in thinking this...
I remember being at Crewe one afternoon about 3 years ago, and hearing the announcement that the next train for Chester would leave from platform 9, formed of 22 coaches. It was actually a 2-car set, which fitted comfortably in bay platform 9.
It's not just toilet doors. Last year I left my seat in a class 67 hauled Mark IV in plenty of time to reach the vestibule, to leave the train. I few others got through the door to that area, then it closed in front of me. The push button did nothing, so I tried to slide the door open manually...
I can see now that 6018 doing the tour, and going into Works are two different stories, so it must have been taken out of storage with minimal attention needed.
I understand that some of the class had full general overhauls early in 1962, then all withdrawn within months, so they must have been...
This tour was very unusual in that all the Kings had been withdrawn in 1962, and I believe 6018 was put through Swindon Works specially to fettle it for the tour.
This must have cost a considerable amount, but I have not been able to find if this was passed on to SLS, with a rather high tour...
I often buy an off-peak return Manchester to Wakefield, and I break my journey at Leeds to have some lunch (Spoons within the concourse area). The barriers there never accept my ticket. It may be because I have a senior railcard, but the barrier staff never ask for or see my card.
One notable use of Mayfield toward the end of its passenger life was the Pines Express from Bournemouth. I think that just about everything else was suburban services. Passengers used to complain about the longer walk into the city centre, as compared to walking from London Road station (now...
As a side issue to this question, the 0117 Man Picc to Cleethorpes also conveyed newspapers, so had to be loaded on the AC side . There was a roadway for this between platforms, where the travelator to plats 13/14 is today. As a result, even as late as summer 1966, this train was booked for all...
At Manchester Picc, trains from Birmingham would enter the platform which had a crossover near the buffers. A lamp showing a red aspect would be placed at the platform edge, short of the crossover. The driver was then able to take the loco to the buffers, reverse over the crossover, and proceed...
