    Stagecoach East Scotland

Isn’t it just to kill time towards maintaining a 15-minute frequency opposite the 73? When XPlore had every other 5 from Barnhill terminating in the city centre, they ran them to the science centre in service for a similar reason.

    Stagecoach East Scotland

As mentioned (and shown in the service changes), the 74 will now be a Carnoustie-Monifieth service.

    Stagecoach East Scotland

Yes, and was confusing at the bus station when you had a service advertised for Dundee/Ninewells that went all round the houses before coming back again.

    Stagecoach East Scotland

Not bad for a guess, then! The 74 and 72 between them give Dundee/Monifieth/Carnoustie a link to Dobbies, with the 74 also providing a connection for the Monifieth "suburbs" onto Dundee/Arbroath services. What's lost is the direct service to Dobbies and the Monifieth "suburbs" along most of...

    Stagecoach East Scotland

Probably way off, but speculatively: 72/73 every half hour from Ninewells, timed opposite each other (i.e. leaving every 15 minutes combined - as they do now). All 72s to Arbroath via Dobbies; all 73s to Carnoustie via Broughty Ferry, with 1ph extending to Arbroath. 74 is then a connecting...

How many railway swing bridges are there?

The Clachnaharry Swing Bridge just outside Inverness carries the Far North/Kyle lines across the Caledonian Canal.

    Caledonian Sleeper

A class 92 is the only locomotive capable of providing the necessary hotel power to the full 16 coach train.

222 contract for Scotrail: updates (not speculation)

That would only work if they started running “InterCity” services to Dunfermline, which I can’t see happening any time soon!

222 contract for Scotrail: updates (not speculation)

Ah, yes - I see an “InterCity” on those renderings. Good stuff. If that’s fully accurate, interesting that only the end cars have the half-saltire, and only at the driving end, the middle has none, and the other two have the saltire in the middle.

222 contract for Scotrail: updates (not speculation)

Good news. As much as I like the HSTs, they are now getting far too old. Even though the livery is being standardised, hopefully the “InterCity” branding is retained (minus the “7”, since Dunfermline decided to go and complicate matters). Maybe more for speculative discussion, but it’s a pity...

    Fire at Glasgow Central (08/03/26)

There’s a video on Reddit showing the collapse, with the large electronic advertising screen giving off a flash before falling: https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/s/cimUATgClj

    Fire at Glasgow Central (08/03/26)

There’s photos on social media of the fire spreading round the corner into Gordon Street (above the Blue Lagoon), so that’s no surprise. I wonder if they’ll start dousing the hotel and other parts of the station?

LNERs binned sausage rolls served to rail passengers

It took me a second to parse that title. I was wondering why LNER would bin sausage rolls already served to passengers.

Carmont inquiry to start in January

Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but it’s almost as if the RAIB are trying to argue “we investigated and came to conclusions, so there’s no need for anyone else to do it”. Which is a ridiculous argument. An FAI is required by law because two of the deceased were killed while at work. And that’s...

    Xplore Dundee

There’s reports in the Courier that Dundee City Council are considering removing the subsidy for evening and Sunday journeys on the 10. https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/5370149/dundee-budget-cut-proposals-unveiled-public-consultation/ (paywalled, unfortunately, but sometimes you can access...

    Stagecoach East Scotland

I was on one of the new Volvo BZL's (service 72) today for the first time and it was making one hell of a noise on board. The best description I can think of is that it was a less-loud version of the noise a Class 91 makes when it departs. I assume that was an oddity with this particular bus...

Audio/visual "next stop" announcements on buses

There’s a few anomalies in Dundee as well. There’s a stop near Ninewells Hospital called “The Shand”, named after a pub that closed in 2011. The stop itself never changed its name, and the announcement on Stagecoach and Xplore now match. Which, in fairness, is probably correct. “Broughty...

TRIVIA - Tunnels with different numbers of tracks at either end

As you leave Dundee station going northbound, 3 tracks go in to the tunnel under the station and 2 come out. There's the lines from platforms 1 and 4, but also the Down Through Line next to 4 that enters the tunnel before merging with the main line.
