NWR Ballast train at Tuxford

Hi, I live near the viaduct in Mansfield and have often seen the Ballast train going past, but it is always going in the same direction - from Mansfield Woodhouse towards Mansfield. Does it use another route to come back or is it in the middle of the night so I don't notice it?
