Cross-country overcrowding: what could be done?

South coast-Manchester services, one delayed due to overcrowding because of an event and two others, on different routes, delayed due to passengers causing a disturbance. Full moon today?

GWR seat reservation tool generating valid travel tickets in error

I’ll be gutted if this facility disappears completely; I commute 50 minutes by Cross Country into New Street a couple of times a week usually using a flexible season and without a reservation there’s little to no chance of a seat. Why stand alone reservations aren’t more easily available I just...

Europheonix and Rail Operations Group - Competitors?

There is no major shareholder in Europhoenix Rail, there are three individuals each owning one third of the shares (or at least that’s how it was in April last year).

    Starting a trip part-way?

Tha is, that's fine if I can't do it then I can't and won't; I know there are some quirks to the ticketing system which was why I asked. But to be clear I'm not trying to use it as a day ranger, I'd be making just one round trip: Why does it make sense that I can go to Birmingham and Stafford...

    Starting a trip part-way?

Yes, so the same round trip is somewhere between £13 and £31 depending on where you start and type of ticket you buy.

    Starting a trip part-way?

So three different prices, from £13 to £31, for the same bum on the same seat...how is that not weird?

    Starting a trip part-way?

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of! Got to love the weirdness of rail pricing;)

    Starting a trip part-way?

Hello rail forums experts, Looking for a little advice please. I want to travel Longton, Uttoxeter, Stafford and back to Longton in a day. Uttoxeter and Stafford are in opposite directions (in rail terms) from Longton. Two returns are over £20 but a Stafford-Uttoxeter return less than £14...

Flexi season ticket-deciding not to travel due to disruption

Hello hive mind, I purchased Flexi season tickets for my commute (split tickets for extra value) before summer engineering works were advertised. The works meant no trains from my station, rail replacement buses offered, but turning 45 mins each way into 90+. I have some flex to work from home...

Stockport engineering works, August 2025: reach of disruption

No, of course not but it would help if the companies communicated their plans properly to the passengers. I’ve now purchased a flexi season ticket of which 2 days will be useless. LNR are saying that they’re not running between Stoke and Stafford for three weeks because of the works at...

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

Maybe, but as I’ve already said this work was cited as improving capacity between Birmingham and Manchester, in that context all its achieved so far is possibly saved a service from being axed to make way for one London-Liverpool service.

Stockport engineering works, August 2025: reach of disruption

Yes, no LNR service between Stoke and Stafford for three weeks, one of those weeks appears to be due to works in the Stone area, the rest is due to Stockport which is a good 20 miles away from anywhere that train covers.

Stockport engineering works, August 2025: reach of disruption

Thanks, although it doesn’t explain why the line is closed for three weeks for one week of works :(

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

So one new service in 9 years, and in the context of a discussion about capacity between Birmingham and Manchester absolutely nothing. Well worth the £250m and disruption ;)

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

Ok, so which new services have been delivered?

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

Thanks, that’s interesting, so the real benefit was allowing through trains from London to Northwest without reducing the Manchester-Birmingham capacity rather than truly improving capacity between those points? I’ve found this from Network Rail...

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

I don’t know the detail of the Liverpool service, but the Sterling will only call at Nuneaton in the West Midland then off via Crewe to Preston so given the comment was about the works improving capacity between Birmingham and Manchester I’m struggling to see how that’s achieved.

Thanks all for the responses, much clearer and more useful than the official information :(

Stockport engineering works, August 2025: reach of disruption

I commute from Stoke to Birmingham a couple of days a week. I’ve found out by accident about disruption next month (nothing on train or at the station yet) but looking further into it I was surprised to see that the LNR Crewe-Stafford service won’t run during this period as I goes nowhere near...

Can GBR bring XC back up to INTERCITY standard?

I’m pretty sure a snail could overtake the EMR Crewe-Derby line, but that’s not necessarily the point, it can be the other way around that the middle road could be used to hold the freight while, say, the Avanti comes into the platform then overtakes on departure.
