This, from https://www.davros.org/rail/culg/northern.html#connections seems to confirm that the widened lines route was used..
"In Underground days the GN&CR was connected to the GNR by a single track from Drayton Park to Finsbury Park goods depot, and until 1970-09-29 trains were exchanged...
Alternatively, from the widened lines, onto the Metropolitan line and straight up to Rayners Lane, Then Picadilly to Kings Cross Loop, then as before.
That idea came from a post at District Dave's at http://www.districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/28508/northern-piccadilly-link. That's where the...
Presumably, the physical connection at Finsbury Park still persisted in some shape or form after 1970 allowing access to the widened lines via Kings Cross. From there, widened lines to link at Farringdon to Met/Circle. Then Circle to High St. Ken, District to Barons Court/Hammersmith. Swap-over...
I've just come across this picture of what looks like some '38 stock being hauled by a battery loco at Crouch End station. This station was on the old line between Highgate and Finsbury Park and the photo must have been before 1970. Apparently, the line was used for tube stock movements, but...
Indeed. Ealing Broadway was a good place to spot! I remember a period of time when the original 252001 HST prototype used to come through every evening, around 17:00 roughly. One evening, though, at a slightly earlier time, we looked down the track and a similarly futuristic sight appeared in...
Sadly, I started my train-spotting career a little too late to see the Warships in their pomp. I did, however, manage to clear the 63 Westerns (out of the original 74) that constituted the entire class according to the "Combined Volume" in 1974, or thereabouts!
I remember Warship D821 "Greyhound" that used to sit in a siding down a bank just east of Reading. It must have been there for years!
I used to see it on my way to Gloucester Eastgate, now sadly gone.
Thanks for the reply, @yorkie! The first photo actually has a discussion about this issue. They talk about the presence of level-crossings and similar, as @Elecman suggested, but I'm sure that the station canopy must have been a contributory factor as well. I can rest easy now - this was...
I occasionally get updates from PInterest, and often they show some fine old photo's of class 76 locos at Penistone. I always get a bit disturbed by these as the overhead catenary seems always to be so far above the ground that the pantographs are almost straining to reach them! No other station...
Thanks Rogmi for the reply. It's good to know that my memory was not playing tricks on me. Can you also pass on to Franklin, my eternal thanks for this monumental piece of work. It's a thoroughly entertaining and fascinating thing!
The Carto metro map seems to show an old double link from the GWR direct onto the District Line tracks at Ealing Broadway. Yet I can distinctly remember a single line link from the GWR slow lines to the Central tracks back in the early 1970's.
Strangely enough on the version shown at Londonist, Holland Park station appears to have disappeared! And indeed the Evening Standard one. Is this a versioning issue, perhaps?
We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
