While I wouldn’t rely on it as my main option, the 2157 from Crewe would probably also get you back to Worcester that night as a backup, either via a nine minute connection in New Street, or 14 and 5 minute connections at Wolverhampton and Smethwick Galton Bridge.
I find Apple’s inbuilt map app brilliant for railways. If you change to public transport (you can set this by default) it shows all the railways, tramlines, underground, and even some heritage lines, in the UK, and most of Europe, North America, Japan and Australia (in process of adding rest of...
If I were to put them in order, just based on how they are in my head, I’d go with
West Coast
East Coast
Great Western
Joint place CrossCountry and Midland
In no particular order, Transpennine, Southwestern, Brighton, Great Eastern
Any other “mainline” (depends how one defines it)
Not quite...
Exmouth to Paignton currently sees 150, 158, 165 and 166. Unlike many of the other examples, these are all very common on the service. In fact, it is rare to have a day when there are not all four classes working at once.
I was on 1E24 1700 Edinburgh to Kings X, travelling Invershin to Brockenhurst, and my brother was on 1Y20 1828 Newcastle to Kings X, travelling Invershin to Nottingham. These were some of the first trains to reach the scene.
All was well until somewhere north of Retford, where we emergency...
Be on the platform as it arrives (0957, although it might be a few mins before that as it has lots of pathing time) and I would guess you’d get a seat (although hard to predict). Stopping only at Southampton and Guildford will have helped, and quite a few get off (and on) at Reading, so be there...
I created this assuming what is physically possible rather than what currently runs in the passenger timetable. Although if it is possible on passenger carrying services that would be a bonus.
Anyway, this new one blows it out of the water, so please do your best to find issue, challenge or...
Knew there would be something. Easily fixed though…
Derby - Syston curve - Peterborough (is this all double?)
Tamworth - Stone - Stoke on Trent - Manchester
Earlestown - Crewe - Shrewsbury
I’m fully expecting to have missed something and that this will need amending, but, assuming not using the same track twice, including reversing, how about:
Arbroath - Edinburgh - York (via Durham coast?) - Leeds - Doncaster - Sheffield - Derby - Nottingham - Peterborough - Cambridge -...
Of course if they had already threatened to sue the forum and individual members, that post would have been quickly removed before many people saw it...
Paddington to Bedwyn hasn’t been cut to Newbury, it’s been split at Newbury. Overall there’s more capacity as replaced by longer trains.
Then there are a few cuts out of Waterloo, Portsmouth direct line and the Poole semifasts cut back to Winchester/Southampton, for example.
