Yup, that's what NR inform us (the residents). I would assume its something to do with lengths of catenary and conductor etc being laid out, trip hazards, risk assessment and all that good stuff. Fortunately we live the right side of the tracks

News from sunny Steventon. They have installed some comedy frills along the parapets of the bridge to stop people poking the OLE with umbrellas. Stocks lane crossing will now be shut for a few days with restricted access via Causeway crossing (no pedestrians and shuttle bus) while they get on...

Here's some snapshots this morning from Steventon bridge, looking East to the 4/2 transition and West towards Stocks Lane.

I'd really like to thank everybody for this thread and forum. It's the best source of information I know of, as the NR website is singularly uninformative and rarely updated.

No problem with reducing the height of the road at Stocks Lane. NR just don't want to do it. Better than Google I just popped down the road for some piccies:

Many thanks. I was driving so saw the steelwork but didn't quite catch up with the wiring. BTW what is all the stuff just to the East of Wantage Road Bridge? Looks very complicated.

Went to the Uffington Show yesterday. Looks as though most of the steelwork Steventon - Wantage Road - Baulking is up and ready for wiring.This has been going on apace last few weeks.

Unfortunately the "vaguely sensible alignment" goes right through some rather spectacular downland, that would require extensive cuttings and tunnels, and the costs would be incredible.

Two, three, four. Presumably the track bed and bridges for much of the GW was for broad gauge. How would width compare overall? How much extra real estate would four tracking actually take up?

It would have been an ideal method and this is of course what was done at Grove, but there are a number of houses and a church in the way. And it's pretty obvious that NR are aesthetic numbskulls, bearing in mind the AONB cockup through the Goring area.

This was considered as an option for those very reasons, but the trade off of levels didn't seem to quite make it work.

I have a lot of sympathy this view. However, local objections would have been far less vociferous had NR come up with a bridge design that had some merit. The replacement bridges that have been erected locally have been lump concrete with armour plated parapets of sheet galvanised steel. Brunel...

To be fair, piling and uprights are well underway both sides of the Steventon bridge so most of the OLE should be in place well ahead of any action. The actual height differences for the wire / bridge are very small and indeed a temporary running solution could be installed, but with possible...

From the ground here in OX13 I hear that decisions regarding the Steventon bridge are still pending with NR refusing to engage with the Steventon Parish Council and acrimony breaking out between the PC and the local MP. It's a total fiasco that has been running for several years now. It is now...

No news at all yet on the bridge at Steventon. No planning decisions due to August, but even then might get kicked into the long grass ....
