The bond markets are in a tizzy globally at the moment due mainly to the Iran war.
We also have many overpriced fares outside of the South East, added to which wages are on average lower, so that argument doesn't hold up (we seem to have been over this ground many times before.
The point...
No, you stated that a national railcard would mainly benefit rich men.
If that were the case it would stand to reason that without the railcard discount, the railway must already be benefitting rich men, therefore is too expensive for non-rich men.
You are making my argument for me.
It...
This was a quote from a transport secretary no less.
The way to stop it becoming a rich man's toy would be to have cheaper fares.
The sort of economics over the past forty years that's got us into the current mess.
London could try making all that GDP without all the agricultural...
So in order to correct some of the inconsistencies of this "simplification" of not knowing what any given fare will be, they've had to further "simplify" the system by varying the amount you have to pay for the flex.
That's transparent and passenger friendly then.
These people must be on...
In terms of Evergreen 3, it would have been a lot harder to undertake without a working railway in place.
East West rail - well funding was confirmed in 2012, so a bit earlier than I'd thought, but still a big gap with not a lot happening before then.
It would have been nice to have had a...
Closed for refurbishment. It wouldn't have done so without the Chiltern line proposal.

I'm afraid the woeful record on English reopenings during most of the privatisation period is the real lack of action.
You posted this:
"Everyone who is 30-60 now was under 30 once. When they were under 30 they could have had a railcard if they chose to do so."
I'm a long way off from 60 and I only had access to the student card, and most people 30-60 did not have access to a railcard for most of the time...
Bicester - Oxford was re-opened by Network SouthEast I think you'll find, and Dalston was a Transport for London extension.
I'll give you Corby though (thin gruel for a couple of decades).
We also have Portishead on its way shortly as well.
But we do actually have a couple of new railways and stations to show for it - which is more than was achieved in England for the previous two decades.
Sometimes politics works !
I suspect that the policy was one of the positive things affecting the governments popularity.
There were of course, probably other factors having a negative effect on its popularity at the time as well.
I'm part of the polity. Given the choice, I would agree to a proportion of my taxes being spent on linking towns to the railway.
Boris Johnson is much disliked on this forum, but whatever his faults, I have always applauded his reversing Beeching policy.
Given the timetable was so complicated, its amazing the line generated the traffic it did.
Imagine how much better the railway might have performed with a more regular timetable and light weight DMU's.
Beeching/Marples are cut a lot of slack on these forums.
Yes, when there's a Z in the day and the railway fancies it.
As someone reliant on train travel, I require more certainty on train fares than when the industry fancies throwing us a cheap fare.
