"and a brief emergency stop (aka full service brake application, I believe) somewhere around Crosby Garrett."
Someone working on the train posted the emergency stop was due to setting fire to the embankment. That must have taken some doing after all the rain in the last few weeks!
A few observations from the day
Trains from Leeds and Bradford weren't rammed. Having a ticket without reservation does not guarantee a seat but my observation was most got on. The trains tend to set off a little late due to numbers boarding. Some got on at Settle and got off on the return. They...
I have finally found reference to a queueing system being put in place for the unreserved seats. So no, not a scrum..... just a long wait, potentially in the cold.
A bit late in the day a full timetable with onward bus times for the three days

It may just be worth turning up as a lot of non local folk I know have decided it's too far to travel on spec.
Update as of 6th Feb. Buses now laid on from Carlisle
A very limited number of tickets with seat reservations are available for the 0825 Appleby-Skipton (Tuesday and Thursday) and 1715 Skipton-Appleby services (each day).
Additional buses are being made available for travel between...
Yes but is it turn up on the day and get a reservation ( and then go and get breakfast somewhere) or is it form an orderly queue? Also how are they managing seat availability for the intermediate stops? I know people are wondering whether to take an early bus but don't want to be standing around...
It depends on whether it's first come first served at the ticket office on the day or stand in a queue. Perhaps someone on here can enlighten you/us on the process to access the unallocated seats and are they leaving some for the people who may or may not get on at the intermediate stops?
I am...
Really? It was a forgone conclusion surely for all sorts of reasons, not least financial. Many locals watch the special charters knowing their chance of affording a trip is slim. At under£18 return for 3 hrs it makes it possible.
Are you looking down the page? Below the full fares are the lower fares i.e. Off peak. I know we paid just under £30 for an adult and a railcard. To be fair if you consider KWVR are charging £220 per person for an Oxenhope/Carlisle return behind the Scotsman a couple of months later when the...
I have just been back to my local station (Virgin) and had a bit of a determined discussion with the ticket people. I already had off peak tickets for the service so just needed reservations. When I told hem I had SEEN reservations booked at Ulverston they grumpily said they would try but it...
I don't think the steam service links with the onward bus service to Carlisle so you would have to look at the next DMU service for Carlisle bus link and earlier DMU service for return to bus back to meet the steam train and I am not sure if it will work tbh.
I note the steam service is now up and tickets buyable as per normal services but no option for reservations. Have spoken to my local ticket office and as it is a Northern service they have no idea how to reserve seats. Anyone know more?
