What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

Sure, I know these kinds of things can be done at some stations. I guess I am thinking about stations where none of these options are available. My two closest ones happen to be examples. So for people entirely dependent on the lifts, many journeys simply become impossible to do by train if...

Expansion of LNER 70-min flex trial area ("Simpler Fares")

This is very well written. The difficulty is communicating all these arguments in an easy to understand way, to regular passengers, because most of them aren't starting from a point of understanding how things currently work, or exactly how they are changing. To them the fares system is already...

    Caledonian Sleeper

    I don't see a reason why they wouldn't.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

It would be interesting to know what this is being done instead of. It's tempting to wonder whether decisions are based on what makes for the best PR on handover to GBR, or on what provides most benefit in the long term.

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

I imagine on cruise liners they have some redundancy, that is, they aren't totally reliant on one single lift to get between two decks. This is the problem with station lifts ... there's often no redundancy at all (understandably to some extent due to limited space) 1788376566 They say where...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

From a bit of reading around, it seems that the problem with fixing lifts is that they can come from a multitude of companies, some of those companies disappear during the lifespan of the lifts, and even when they don't, they don't keep a stock of spare parts because of the cost of doing so. And...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

This doesn't seem to work in my browser. I did, when i first looked at it, wonder if some of the red periods were overnight but had no way of checking. Of course if lifts are unavailable when the station's not open, then this affects the picture, they may even be deliberate maintenance...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

How are you getting the detail on time of day etc? The website doesn't seem to offer this to me.

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

The 30 day availability may improve, yes, or it may get worse again - we can't say. Maybe it will suffer another multi-day failure in Spetember, maybe it won't. I deliberately said "on average". The current 7 day availability, which doesn't include that long term failure is currently at 90%...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

This may be true, but it just means that the lift needs to be specified appropriately for its intended use. Obviously a station lift is generally going to have to be more robust than one in a retail setting, for the reasons you give.

    EPR (Europhoenix Rail) - Class 60s - (Ex-ESH / DBI Rail / Land Recovery)

It was painted in triple grey for ESH. Now (only a few months later) it has been repainted into the new EPR livery. It's a full repaint not just sticking some decals on top. You can see from the colour of the posts between the front and side cab windows which were yellow but are now the base...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

I've discovered there's a website that monitors station lift availability: https://stationlifts.org.uk It lets you see the history up to a year ago. The results for my two stations are pretty poor: https://stationlifts.org.uk/DMK/history https://stationlifts.org.uk/HNH/history Of course I...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

It feels to me much more likely that a station lift will be out of service, than one in a retail store. Finding a lift out of order at a shop is pretty rare. On the other hand, finding one or more of the lifts out of action at my two nearest stations with lifts, both with annual exits/entries...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

Lots of people rely on lifts to make journeys possible, so I would say they are a critical part of the rail infrastructure. But it feels to me like a lift failure is not really treated as an urgent situation. Lifts, it seems, can sometimes be out of action for days. So, what actually happens...

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

I think it must be near enough finished - none of that machinery seemed to be doing anything when I took the photo - in fact there was hardly any activity obvious anywhere on site.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

I think the "rebuilt" bit on the upside is the area where they seemed to have dumped a load of aggregate to make a sort of access ramp during the works. You can see that it doesn't extend all the way to the overbridge (to the left in this view) where the suspected rail buckle ocurred. I think on...

Thanks for this, a good reminder that it wasn't as simple a story as Gateway opening and taking away trade.

I wonder if we will ever see intermodal by rail from Thamesport again, or whether that's been thoroughly killed off by London Gateway.
