Sadiq Khan says future of Heathrow Express should be ‘reconsidered’ due to Elizabeth line success

My understanding from previous posts is that the HEx following the semi fast provides a gap for the semi fast to move over to the reliefs before it’s run down by the following fast. So the path only exists for that section. If you wanted to have paths all the way to Reading they would need to be...

VOIP - Why all the misinformation?

I'm interested in this having to buy a new phone thing. The installs I've seen have had an RJ11->BT socket adapter to allow plugging in your old analogue phone into the broadband router. If it's Openreach doing the physical connection, I'm surprised you can't find several providers. BT, EE...

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

There are signs all round the station, e.g. https://live.staticflickr.com/608/21391313949_f42fcd10bf.jpg (image showing signs with arrows to different sets of platforms)

    Reform UK discussion

It's the same as any gold rush, the people who make the money are selling the pickaxes. In the case of Ben Delo he founded a trading platform for crypto currencies. So effectively he's a banker taking a cut of every transaction. And at 0.01% - 0.05% that implies there's an awful lot of trading...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

A tunnel to the other side would be running under the live railway and you’d have to at least partially rebuild the main station building to have a subway entrance on that side. That’s a considerably more complex piece of work than a subway under an unbuilt track. It would also potentially be...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

Previously platform 4 had a coffee shop/newsagent, which seems the minimum set you’d want for passengers coming through that entrance...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

As per the update in post #831, they’re starting on enabling works for platform 5 and the western entrance. Correctly these were paused to get the bridge finished, but that’s just over a week away. The Cowley branch reopening depends on this work, so it would be incredibly embarrassing for the...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

That would be a little tricky when there’s a track in the way.

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

Though if you’re using their app to get electronic receipts, it only prints a short summary with the barcode to get you through the gates, rather than the full receipt.

New Alstom units for TPE: what could this mean for the 185 / 802 fleets?

The 150s are about 40 years old now and still in use. Given the number of classes that would be in the queue for withdrawing first, it seems unlikely we’ll be sufficiently well off for self-powered units that they would be straight off for scrapping.

OxRail 2040 - plan from Oxfordshire County Council

The Cowley Branch is only a single track. You’re not going to get much more than the 2tph on it. I expect many people taking rail journeys will switch to using the new stations. (I know I will). But that’s a tiny fraction of the passengers on the buses, who are going to the city centre.

BBC: UK's third-biggest taxpayer to leave for Greece

They outsource most of the PAYE tracking to the employers. But the major difference is that with income there is a transaction. Which makes it easy to say take N% off before it gets to the recipient. The problem with most wealth taxes is valuation. Capital Gains works because you're selling the...

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Isn’t that what all politicians do? Promise to spend taxpayers money on the things the voters want? Trump is just being a bit more obvious about it.

OxRail 2040 - plan from Oxfordshire County Council

Also, surely the point of adding another platform is to give options rather than trying to stuff everything into the same one? If something is sitting in 4, send the next one to 5? If you’re terminating from the North, there’s 1-3 to choose from.

Wind Power and UK Energy Use

Though that is the price for electricity purchased on the spot. How much of our electricity is now purchased through CfD or similar and therefore that price isn't relevant?

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

I don't recall there were many bells and whistles on the proposed Western entrance. But I think it is absolutely necessary as part of the platform 5 works. You've now got two platform faces worth of passengers getting over the bridge within the station. How many times do we need to learn the...

    Relocating the UK's capital city

Physically it may be possible, but @3141 ‘s point is that currently there is a degree of connectivity with all these institutions being in the same place. Which you risk losing if you split them up. Yes, videoconferencing has moved on, but there is value in say the Chancellor being able to drop...

    Relocating the UK's capital city

But it is for the UK, which is what is being discussed.

Rail replacement - will GBR enable a greater use of diversionary routes to avoid it?

I suspect many people will be thinking of how classes 14X, 15X, and 170 can interoperate despite there being 20ish years between the first and last of those. It may be that only worked as those were relatively simple units, but it doesn’t seem impossible to design a suitable extensible standard...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Of course, the original Y design did include serving Sheffield and Leeds. Which would have given them faster services to London and also provided a high speed link for those cities to Birmingham, which a route following the east coast would not.
