    Simple. They don't get a vote. Althought that tactic could backfire as people can vote with their money. The beauty of a free market.

    Be careful with this one as it only applies to peak direction 6 and 7 lines. The diamond used to refer to rush hour services (not always express) and was used on more lines than today. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Great line that was just a part of a much larger "el" network...

    I appreciate the responses so far, but I am only slightly less confused about the routes in my original post. I'm aware of the shortest route rule, the 3-mile rule and the fare-check rule. What I don't understand is why there are permitted routes in the yellow pages for the station pairing...
