As a former Oxford resident I'm delighted to see the new railway developments. I moved away just before Oxford Parkway was opened, though I've used the Marylebone-Oxford line since then.
After the Cowley branch meets the main line, it goes past Redbridge Park & Ride. An additional station there...
I agree entirely with the cost/benefits analysis of the Carmarthen route. If the main aim is to regain the lost access for Aberystwyth back to the South Wales coastal railway, then it seems expensive and unfeasible in the short term.
The schemes mentioned to revitalise existing but unused or...
I'm surprised they've suddenly realised this. The artist's impressions of the new Capital Square project were doing the rounds last year, and the views of the front of the station showed there was no drop off area, e.g...
In that case, should the Carmarthen reopening campaign direct their efforts towards improving connections and train frequency on the Cambrian Line instead, e.g. one train per hour? (Assuming availability of new rolling stock etc). And would additional direct services going beyond Birmingham be...
Excellent summary! And I agree that Camarthen-Aber wouldn't be worth it for West Wales traffic flows. By contrast more capacity should be added in North Wales, despite the smaller population centres, because existing lines like Bangor-Caernarfon could be extended at reasonable cost.
I think...
It surprises me that the Brecon area hasn't attracted a more significant heritage railway than the Mountain Railway. If some enterprising enthusiasts had thought to save a few miles of track at the time of closure, Brecon could have had a stunning steam railway through the national park. Even if...
At least the bus hub will be close to the station and is integrated into the main development plan. At one stage they were talking about dispersing the buses across the city centre. It's not 100% ideal but compared to the shambles since they knocked down the original bus station, it's a step...
Most of the trackbed from Pontyclun to the outskirts of Beddau looks intact. If Google satellite is to be believed, a fair bit of track remains in place, including a bit that's embedded in the A473 near the Ely River!
To be fair, most of the old Taff Vale trackbed to Creigiau is accessible...
On a slightly related note, it'd be good to reopen the station at Pontrilas, roughly halfway between Abergavenny and Hereford. Much of the infrastructure is still there including a freight siding. There's a local campaign and it's often mentioned as an aspiration by the Herefordshire rail...
My father often talks fondly of taking the train from Cardiff to Aberystwyth when he was a student in the 1950s! He certainly regrets the closure of this route. I'd love to see it open again but appreciate the business case isn't very sound.
As a purely hypothetical alternative, how about...
Living as I do on the City Line near Fairwater, I've got mixed feelings about reopening the Fairwater-Creigiau link. Certainly we'd benefit from having more trains through our stations (I make a lot of use of Fairwater station and really miss having a Sunday train service!).
Much of the old...
I've always thought the Brecon-Hereford line via Hay-on-Wye should've been kept open (and apparently this was discussed when the other lines shut).
A glimmer of hope is the proposed re-opening to passengers of the freight line to Cwm Bargoed, which has also been suggested for extension to...
