UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Not just that but the CO2 and NOx impact of train transportation (both passenger and freight) is going to take a real knock when compared to road in the next decade, unless there is a major effort to electrify and convert to battery. Clearly the are other benefits with rail based public...

    Relocating the UK's capital city

If folk are going for places that are former capital cities, Tamworth also has that claim too! It was the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia. If Mercia had subsumed Wessex rather than the other way round perhaps it would still be the capital…

    Relocating the UK's capital city

That would work both ways though. I strongly suspect if you did that it would be somewhere like Tamworth which has good links to road (M6/M6 Toll/M42), rail (WCML and XC), and an airport (Birmingham Airport is closer to central Tamworth than Heathrow is to central London).

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Thanks. Yes, it definitely feels like momentum is shifting especially in the private market. I think the next couple of years will see a very rapid change in the market and those companies calling for a change in the quotas will simply be left behind to die by the others that prepared to make...

    You are quite correct, apologies.

Early majority (the pragmatists post Crossing the Chasm) starts in the low 30%… Thats when the pace picks up as the product (in this case EVs) goes mainstream.

Evidence that the UK has crossed the chasm and is now moving into the ‘early majority’ phase of the Technology Adoption curve. (Image shows the Technology Adoption curve)

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

If you’re using a rapid/Ultra rapid the etiquette is (or should be) to only charge to 80% and then move as it normally takes as long to go from 80 to 100% as it does from 10-80%. As the OP was discussing finishing charging at 3am I am presuming(?) this is likely to be a slow AC charger. In...

Union Jack-style Great British Railways branding at major Glasgow station angers Scottish government officials

The sociologist Steve Bruce has spent parts of his career studying sectarianism in Scotland. He has written extensively on it. Here is just one example from 2005: https://web.archive.org/web/20070103044854/http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/comment.cfm?id=171622005 Here is a link to the book he...

Union Jack-style Great British Railways branding at major Glasgow station angers Scottish government officials

^ This. Passengers don’t care about branding, or governments putting flags on trains in order to distract from their own failings, and they certainly aren’t going to get confused by it. They care about trains turning up on time and being able to get a seat.

Union Jack-style Great British Railways branding at major Glasgow station angers Scottish government officials

Flags only matter to nationalists of whatever persuasion. They don’t matter to the vast of users and the priorities of management should be running the best possible network for them. Not whether some stupid branding incorporates one flag or another. In my opinion this is yet another reason why...

Union Jack-style Great British Railways branding at major Glasgow station angers Scottish government officials

I’m not sure how the Union Jack is any more or less provocative than the Saltire. - Quoting from the memorandum of understanding posted by @zwk500. Do Transport Scotland really think passengers are that stupid? No of course they don’t. This is just petty politics being played by nationalists...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

The economics of this just isn’t there. There are roughly 8500 petrol stations in the UK, which provide 100% of petrol/diesel to run the vast vast majority of ICE vehicles in the UK. According to Uswitch link below there were 44000 public charging locations (5x more) in the UK in November 2025...

Should GBR have a freight business? Is the sale of DB Cargo UK an opportunity to acquire one?

Given the current government (continuing a trend from previous administrations) appear to be doing everything they can to avoid nationalising Thames Water, I can’t see this happening. Nationalising water companies is actually something Thames Water customers and the wider general public actually...

You’ll also note that the Gloucester Services chargers are 69p kWh (despite being at a Motorway Services), 6.7% cheaper than the OPs quoted 74p.

Plus if you are public charging regularly you’d buy a subscription which would significantly reduce the cost.

Sadly I’m one of them. I do about 20000 miles per year and about 12-14000 is for work trips. I’m on my own 99.9% of the time for that. What you can’t see is all the kit that is being carried in the boot of the car that I need on site. Another transport method simply wouldn’t be practical. In...

    DB Cargo UK being sold

That’s all fine and dandy but it’s been over 27 years. In that time EWS has gone from something like a stable 80-90% market share (and a 40% rise in tonne miles in four years) to its current circa 20%. You cannot continually blame this decline on one man who was CEO for four years, three decades...

    DB Cargo UK being sold

Direct Rail Services was created in 1994, almost two years before EWS. GB Railfreight was created in April 1999 and Freightliner Heavy Haul wasn’t formed until January 2000, six months after Burkhardt left. Advenza Freight were created in 2001 and Colas not until 2007. EWS market share was...
