Least popular journeys made between two stations served by a direct train? Based on tickets sold?

Can't think many Acklington to Pegswood tickets will ever have been sold.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

I'm sure the transport correspondent on tonight's Radio 4 PM mentioned something about the driver of the HST "looking for a different track" after encountering the first landslip. The BBC doesn't appear to care much about accurate reporting any more. The original reports about carriages going...

Enforcement of the new rules on social distancing, unnecessary journeys etc.

The news this morning reported that the Irish government are/have brought in rules stating that exercise is only permitted within 2km of home - if that's true, then I can see a similar "clarification" of the UK rules being brought in to prevent the sort of thing we're discussing on this thread.

Enforcement of the new rules on social distancing, unnecessary journeys etc.

Those of you advocating that "non-essential" travel does not cover driving to a country park or other beauty spot, etc. as it does not harm or affect anyone else, may wish to consider the following: I live five minutes' walk from a large coastal nature reserve and country park, one with miles...

Coronavirus virus fears causing panic buying

I work in the NHS. We’re having a hard enough job coping at the moment without people thinking the rules or the advice doesn’t apply to them and therefore potentially causing more cases which will inevitably tip the system beyond breaking point.... if only those of you contemplating non-urgent...

Tyne and Wear Metro - industrial action (overtime ban)

According to reports on BBC News this morning, there's a further strike planned for 6th/7th January 2020 - so a Monday and Tuesday to affect commuters coming back to work after the Christmas/New Year holidays?

    T&W Metro facing "budget crisis"

If there's a financial crisis at Metro, it's just been deepened by the overheads coming down at Hebburn yesterday - services were initially suspended from Monument towards Brockley Whins and later from just Pelaw to South Shields. "Normal service" resumed this morning.

Strangest Places you have come across trains

A short 7.25" gauge railway on Sanday, one of the North Isles of Orkney - the Sanday Light Railway had two steam locomotives and three petrol ones. My first visit to Sanday was in September 2006, a few months before the railway and its associated tea room closed. I was the only visitor that...

Man runs up and down train carriages shouting "Fire!"

Not sure if this one has reached the national news websites yet - from The Scotsman of 31/05/19: Seems to have happened on 1E19 ex Waverley 1431, arrived (and caped) at Berwick 181 minutes late (classed as "disorder" according to RTT). It's all happening this week....

Tyne & Wear Metro: Fleet Refurbishment List

Yes, there were still two road-railers present at Felling on Tuesday. And then there's the huge swathe of land Stobart Rail plant has been tearing up just next to Pelaw as well - what is that for?

LNER site selling off peak return when return train in peak?

That's great, thanks to both of you for taking the trouble to reply.

LNER site selling off peak return when return train in peak?

Thanks for that - yes it is the £40.20 off peak return and the tickets do mention TO at end of a website address. So in essence my return portion from Manchester Airport is actually valid even though the departure time is in the peak period? Just trying to get my head around this you...

LNER site selling off peak return when return train in peak?

Hello I am trying to check whether an off peak ticket i bought on the LNER website is actually valid for the return service. York to Manchester Airport, outward Saturday 4th May Sep 1321 so that's fine, but it gave me the return as my required option of departing Manchester Airport at 1819 on...

    Morpeth Curve

True, but my experiences on the bus route from Newcastle to Morpeth and beyond were before the current works at the North end of Gosforth started. Replying to an earlier post, there is no real connectivity between bus and train in Moroeth, although there is an infrequent (and I believe...

    Morpeth Curve

In the peak evening period, Arriva buses from Morpeth (X14 from Thropton, X15 from Berwick, X16 from Morpeth and X18 from Alnwick via Amble) are often up to twenty minutes late arriving at Newcastle Haymarket bus station because of traffic jams at Gosforth Park on the A1 Western Bypass, in...

Tyne and Wear Metro history resources

I remember watching blue diesels pulling freight vans through Regent Centre after it opened as a Metro station: sorry but can't remember the exact types now. I was told at the time that some served the Winthrop Laboratories and (more likely) the Rowntree factory up at Fawdon.

Railway bookshops in the North of England

But it's expensive, the books aren't always in a condition that reflects the price listed and try not to visit in school holidays as you'll not get moved inside. Worth going out of season just to see the old Alnwick Station building though and the cafe is good, though busy. May I also suggest...

0-4-0 on wagon outside NRM - ID please?

Yes thanks to you all, that's it. The saddle seems to have been removed as it's not fitted at present but it's the same locomotive.

0-4-0 on wagon outside NRM - ID please?

Hello Whilst passing the NRM at York on the train on a couple of occasions recently I've noticed a green 0-4-0 sitting on a low wagon on the sidings next to the main line at the museum. Firebox, cab, frames and wheels seemingly all present but awaiting restoration? Would anyone know which...
