Seems quite a good idea to have a cheap wire style bike lock (or similar) to lock it to the luggage rack (if the configuration allows). I've seen something similar provides on airport trains in Japan. Unfortunately unlikely to be implemented here as our trains tend to have a lot less spare space.

I agree with the bulk of what you say, although there are some routes where genuine competition exists. Most notably, between Osaka and Kyoto, there are three competing train lines / companies: JR, Keihan and Hankyu.

Crossrail promised toilets at all but two of the new stations (Canary Wharf and Bond Street excluded). However, I haven't noticed toilets or toilet signage on the photos and videos of the new stations (e.g. Tottenham Court Road). Did Crossrail lie when they said toilets would be available? Or...

Or, another somple idea, couldn't the gig have taken place at an earlier time of day? I can't see a problem in having a gig starting a couple of hours earlier and finishing around 9pm on a Sunday.

Completely privatise the railways, as in Japan. For any given line, one company should own the track, the rolling stock, and operate the services. Therefore the companies involved would have a genuine long term incentive to improve services.

I made a booking two days ago, but found a nondescript error message every time I'd allocated myself a different berth in a different coach and tried to proceed. The only way to proceed was to stick with the original allocation.

This maybe be a naive question, but do the conductors do a ticket check after every station on these services? If so, wouldn't it make sense for the conductors to mark each seat as taken or vacanct at that time? That's the system I've seen in Japan.

Thanks. If that's the case, then surely they can't operate a normal timetable. Is it on the cards that they might just throw in the towel and cease operations? I can't imagine it's profitable for then to be running services with many delays, cancellations and repairs.
