Aluminium in its purest form will dissolve when exposed to water. It is treated with aluminium oxide to stop this process. So can only imagine something has gone with the weld?

Yes, Network Rail use the Mark 5 dimensions as a profile for their tracks design. Also we would have had 155 mph trains running back in 1995, using the mark 5 and class 93 loco. Just experienced the new 377s on the MK to Clapham route. Beats the Siemens product hands down. A lot quieter, air con that doesn't blow your ears out (or bang in and out at a neutral section), much better ambiance and bogies that don't rattle around. Well done Derby!

I rather suspect that Hitachi were always going to get the deal on East Coast. The Department for Idiots would of given them the nod ages ago so that Hitachi could justify and would 'invest' (very loose term) in the flat-packed making factory at Newton wherever it is.

True and maintenance would be a problem. Would be good to have something radical. Shake up Virgin and the trains would be miles more comfortable at longer distance travel then those Siemens trains

How about LM having some 91/MK4s? They could use them in competition with Virgin on their longer distant services. Maybe develop some more as routes as well. Now that would give the bearded one something to think about! If they stopped at, for example, Watford, Milton Keynes, Northampton etc...

Very much agree. Think it is more political. That £1.2 billion could be much better spent on upgrading the 225s plus other trains on the network. Maybe get rid of those damn Pacers!!!!!!!!!!

I Went on the 225 to York, and thought it was a very nice bit of kit. So, as they don't really need replacing (miles better than Pendos!) why spend all that money? Maybe to justify the Ikea flat pack factory in Durham?
