I cannot understand how that delay has been arrived at but it's an automated system and they get things wrong. Or contact them by phone or whatever. It certainly isn't going to sort itself out.

Isn't that much the same as selling a first class ticket when an on-board upgrade might be available? The difference being that you can reserve a seat or have some priority for available seats.

You would not be at risk of a penalty fare as neither Hull Trains or Grand Central operate a penalty fare scheme, and both allow tickets to be purchased on board their services.

Arrival at Aviemore was around 13 hours after scheduled departure from Euston. I doubt anyone was still asleep at that time.

I think in those circumstances Caledonian Sleepers might well ask why you didn't mitigate the delay by leaving their train at Aviemore (or earlier).
