    1995: BBC “Channel Wars” documentary

I wonder if that's because commercial drivers in their vehicles would count against working hours limits, while getting in a passenger carriage would allow them to take a mandated break?

Berwick Upon Tweed instead of Edinburgh

Yep that's what I've done. I'm pretty comfortable now.

Berwick Upon Tweed instead of Edinburgh

Yes I tweeted at them and they said it was no problem as long as it was the same train.

Berwick Upon Tweed instead of Edinburgh

What a pain, but it is what it is. What about finishing short? Might be able to get picked up from there and it feels very odd to say you're not allowed to get off a train. Obviously it's not a break of journey because there's no intention to continue on.

Berwick Upon Tweed instead of Edinburgh

I have tickets booked from Edinburgh to London and back next week. It being LNER, they're advance tickets (sigh). Unexpectedly, I'm going to be in the countryside a bit closer to Berwick Upon Tweed than Edinburgh that week. My train goes through Berwick and stops there both ways so I was...

    Trenitalia Compensation Request

I put in a compensation application due to strikes in March this year. Got a confirmation like you and then nothing else. Then they emailed me in September to say a refund was coming.

Disruption near Denmark Hill / Loughborough Junction (21/06)

I'm on the broken down train. We're about to evacuate over the track. Going to miss my flight as a result. Is there an easy way to get proof off this delay for travel insurance purposes? 1750504947 Apparently a broken shoe on the Thameslink I'm on, we're shortly going to walk to Loughborough...

    CIV/LNE Minimum Connection Time

I've booked a seat I just meant it's not the end of the world if I miss it.

ECML Signal Failure (22/05) - Special Working?

1E24 now going through the affected area southbound. Our guard said 11 signals to be passed at danger with a 50mph speed restriction and then a pause while the driver gets the train reconnected to the signal system. I'd guess we're running about 2 hours later.

ECML Signal Failure (22/05) - Special Working?

Anyone on what should have been the 19.10 out of Northallerton (17.00 from Edinburgh, 18.29 from Newcastle)? Want to come and say hi? PM me :) Edit: Think it should be 1E24.

ECML Signal Failure (22/05) - Special Working?

I'm on a southbound service on the ECML and we were told that due to signal failures all services were cancelled southbound from Newcastle, except two trains an hour from LNER using special working. I was wondering what special working means in this context? Giving drivers authorisation to...

    CIV/LNE Minimum Connection Time

Ah didn't realise I had to add both, thanks for that 18.00 train it is.

    CIV/LNE Minimum Connection Time

I'm planning a journey back from Switzerland to Scotland and am just looking at booking my CIV/London International ticket from KGX to EDI. Am I right in thinking the minimum connection time is 16 minutes? Brtimes.com shows 15 minute connection time at KGX and then a 1 minute fixed link from...

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

It seems pretty similar to London-Edinburgh in that respect. Train is 4h20-4h40 and there are quite a lot of flights to LCY. Lots of people still prefer the train to flying. I've got a stronger preference than most of my colleagues and will actively avoid flying, but most of them will still...

    Frejus Tunnel - Any Updates

Thanks, guess I'll just go via Switzerland. Can't be bothered with faffing around on the train-bus-train service.

    Frejus Tunnel - Any Updates

Follow up question, does anyone know of any updates on the Frejus Tunnel. All I can find is articles saying "Q1 2025" for reopening, but without any further details. I'm going to be traveling from Milan to Paris in mid-March so it would be helpful if it was open. I expect the answer is most...

Frankfurt to Brussels - midi. Why does dbahn split this:

Poor I'd think (unless you're in business premier with the later cut-off). The cut-off for check-in is 30 minutes, so 13.50. That gives you 15 minutes, which would just about be ok at Brussels Midi if you were guaranteed no delays. I don't think that DB service has had great reliability and...

Your experiences of travelling by train with a bike in mainland Europe (or elsewhere in the world)

I did a trip where I caught the train out to Strasbourg from Calais and then cycled back to the Hook of Holland. Local trains to Paris were fine, but slow - I went Calais-Amiens-Paris. The Calais to Amiens train was almost empty and had plenty of bike space. The train on to Paris was very...

    Eurostar Wifi

I think I managed once. While sitting in St Pancras. I've never had it work at all while on the move. It's a very poor contrast to the TGV wifi, which I've found very reliable and fast enough to be useable.

Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART) Trains

Hiked up there last year and my favourite bit was the hut at the top had the following in its menu (in German): "Why don't you try a refreshing wank spritz?"
