Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

No nothing to provide the Hotel and aux supplies in the EMU. 1789737967 Loads of links (Alstom/TP/DFT) in the TP thread now in the "speculative" section

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

Correct This is where looking back at several years of operating data understand what happens is very useful. Luckily for TP the standard layovers at some of these coastal termini are pretty large so the "top up" can be fairly large if not back to full. The future timetable could be different...

    Northampton freightliner failed (08/09)

Keep the water pump rotating faster after a period of higher power running till the engine cools down. There are 3 idle rpms depending on what is / has been going on.

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

And Platform 4 can take several minutes to clear the platform via the footbridge. Given that Cowley and EWR will effectively need P5 how informed are Paul Clifton's comments? Or is it a case that the P5 cost would be pushed on to EWR and Cowley schemes?

Wind Power and UK Energy Use

I think a big part of the "plan" is an indirect duct tape solution strategy to make the problem smaller and thus more tractable the problem is that this takes time: 1) fix the grid capacity issues*, in reality it may take another 3 years before we start seeing massive changes especially on...

Paddington-Reading blocked due to OLE isolation and lineside fire (5/9)

Hopefully that is all it is but NG, UKPN and NR might want to pay for some foliage trimming along the towpath both on the towpath (often more material) and NR side of the fence (often less material).

Paddington-Reading blocked due to OLE isolation and lineside fire (5/9)

Given that the other side of the fence is the Grand Union Canal towpath plenty of opportunity for "vandalism" including (foreign) state sponsored which may be why they may not be saying too much at this stage. Too much easily accessible critical infrastructure along that section of towpath and...

Wind Power and UK Energy Use

Looks like it started at 0830 BST with more coming on line in stages later. The other 2 of those farms has never got above 50% so plenty more capacity yet to come on line.

Why are there indents that looks like cracks at Some Railjoints? Or are they Cracks?

    1. The joint are not ordinary rail joints they are Insulated Block Joints (IBJs) at the end of track circuit sections for signalling, thus sometimes (at a minimum of 1 end of the section) requiring cables to be attached to the rails. 2. These sleepers are designed for use with Insulated Block...

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

It depends on which route is used for Doncaster to Hull, via Goole or via Selby both routes are used by different operators, East of Gilberdyke covers both. Having the end point just east of the swing bridge would only leave a 6 mile gap in the via Selby route (NE of Templehirst Jn)

He stated he asked google ai because that was the only way he could find anything - which had ended up self-reinforcing the 120 number. Much better go to west from Hull to Gilberdyke as @zwk500 says and the OHLE can take the hotel and aux loads during the long layovers in Hull and charge at...

ScotRail Suburban Fleet (EMU and BEMU) Market Engagement

You have heard about EMR 810 problems? Which is what happens when you let ex-AB reengineer an AT300... Frecciarossa 1000 was mostly Bombardier design with careful supervision of Ansaldo Breda for assembly - the Italian government knew it couldn't trust AB and FS had been insisting AB buy in...

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

The lack of overall rolling stock strategy is a big problem as the focus tend to be on direct replacement of old stock or short branch line because they should be easy (but have no easy sufficient charging opportunity in reality rather than biting off easier to BEMU routes and cascading non...

Another massive issue (of many The power supply in the Reading area is pretty maxed out (no Bramley feeder). The reality is than large section of many exiting routes have constrained supply capacity Agreed Which tells you that the "Google AI" search result in April 2026 of 120miles is...

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

And some of the more problematic bridges at the Birmingham end are being dealt with by HS2. 1788267821 The problems is the force available for acceleration decreases with speed hence increasing timing taken to accelerate to higher speeds means the energy consumed is greater than squared / unit...

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

Yes. Force is proportional to v^2 (+ v + C + Potential Energy from elevation change) and Power is v^3 ([Force egn] *v), Energy is more complex on passenger trains as Hotel and aux loads /mile go up as you travel more slowly - the battery is best though of a bucket with a hole in it to represent...

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

A couple of major misconceptions: [0. You would give any CAF engineers reading that a heart attack!!! and engineers elsewhere would spill their popcorn or coffee] 1. No one (UK or globally) is proposing BEMU operation above 100mph on battery as the energy usage is too high. DfT, NR, RSSB...
