GWML - signal fault at Twyford (21 April)

I think ORR did investigate around 18 months ago, and they found Network Rail to be in breach of their licence. The head of the Wales and Western Route resigned and a new one appointed. A plan was put in place for improving the situation. As someone who uses the route often, at varying times of...

    State of GWR’s IETs

It's even worse than that - not even all vestibules have bins. I've had occasions where I've taken my rubbish with me as I go to alight, only to find there's no bin in that particular vestibule, and I'm left carrying it down the platform at Paddington. The thing I find frustrating about the...

Flying Scotsman London to Cardiff (7th June)

Looking at the RTT pages from yesterday, there was no significant delay in either direction, so reasonable to assume there were no trespass issues on this occasion. I saw it (from behind a fence) at Tilehurst, along with one other spotter, and a passer-by who asked what we were waiting for and...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Hi all, My wife and young son have seats booked to Aberdeen tomorrow night (5th April), and has just been told that they will have to change carriages during the night at Edinburgh. Does anyone know the reason for this? Not happened to us before on the Aberdeen portion though I know it has been...

Contactless from Elizabeth line through to LU

Thanks all. Yes, I'm intending to use the Elizabeth line straight through into the core so no change at Paddington. The doubt in my mind was around whether it was possible to make one contactless journey from outside the oyster zone through into the classic tfl tube network, but it sounds like...

Contactless from Elizabeth line through to LU

Tomorrow I intend to travel from Maidenhead to Belsize Park, using EL to Tottenham Court Road and then LU Northern line. I can use contactless from Maidenhead (outside the oyster zone), but do I need to touch out and in again at Paddington/Tottenham Court Road? Or can I touch in once at...

What locos will step in to take on Clan Lines schedule for the rest of 2022?

Duchess of Sutherland made an appearance on the British Pullman last month on a Victoria to Bristol tour, so it clearly fits the criteria, but maybe it’s not available this time.

Gwr service strikes overhead wires at hanwell 23/09

For once I was lucky here. My day in London finished early and I left Paddington on 1C89, which I believe was the last long distance service to escape without delay. I’m back in tomorrow afternoon though so hopefully it’s a quicker fix this time, as I don’t fancy the Waterloo trundle on a...

    Possible disruption 19th September?

This is one of my pet peeves during disruption. The “check before you travel” line, which is repeated everywhere you can think to check, with no further advice on where to check to get reliable up to date information. I feel like the purpose of this suggestion is to decrease the number of would...

    Elizabeth line evening peak travelcard

Thanks for pointing this out, I was unaware that a tube journey was included in the contactless fare from Reading. When travelling off peak I use a network railcard so don’t tend to use the contactless option, but later in the year I will be making a similar journey in the morning peak so I will...

    Elizabeth line evening peak travelcard

Thanks, that’s what I understood to be the case. Sorry, I wasn’t clear enough. I meant there are no evening peak restrictions on services to Paddington; I know there are restrictions on services from Paddington. I feared as much. That’s going to be a bit of a drag if it becomes a regular...

    Elizabeth line evening peak travelcard

Question: Can I use an off peak Reading to London zones 1-6 travelcard on the Elizabeth line central core in the evening peak? Background: my regular commute at the moment is Reading to the west end arriving around 6pm. I normally do Reading to Paddington and then Bakerloo line to Charing...

    Signalling staff shortages at Paddington

Do feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but I was under the impression that the problem here is due to a large number of vacancies and higher than normal staff absence at TVSC, rather than industrial action that might arise from RMTs current ballot. Is there already a work to rule taking place...

    Signalling staff shortages at Paddington

This is still an issue. I’m currently sitting at Paddington on 1C37, the 22:32 for Bristol, but we’ve been told it’s not going to leave until after 23:00 due to a lack of signallers, and nor is anything else. A look at the open train times signalling map does indeed show every single train at...

Trivia: Examples of errors or faults or quirks with station automated announcements or departure screens or CIS systems.

Last time I went into London from Reading (28th April) the automated announcement said the train was formed of 13 coaches. GWR Trains between Reading and Paddington can be 5, 9 or 10 coaches if IETs, or 4/8 if 387s. TfL rail services are 7 or 9. Not sure how you could make 13 from any of those!

Disruption to services - Storm Dudley & Storm Eunice

Shambolic communication from GWR today. I'm sure they had their reasons for not running a service between Paddington and Reading for much of the day, but the lack of information to plan ahead was unforgivable. A message was posted on their website at 10:30am this morning stating that an hourly...

"Rail’s growth agenda evaporates as Treasury takes control"

Having just read through the last few pages of this thread, I feel like public enemy number one. That’s as someone who earns a living working for a (partly publicly funded) opera company, has used both sleeper services multiple times (most regularly to visit family in NE Scotland - very...

Avanti not recognising advertised connection at Runcorn

The work taking place at Runcorn appeared to be only outside the station in the car park/taxi rank area, not inside the station itself, so i would have thought that unlikely. Runcorn is a simple station with two platforms connected by an overbridge, so it shouldn’t need a long minimum...

Avanti not recognising advertised connection at Runcorn

Yesterday I had to travel from London to Frodsham after a day’s work in London. I carried out my usual ticket buying routine which is search for a ticket on National Rail website, then buy my chosen ticket from the Scotrail website, as I find this easiest to use. The journey shown which suited...

GWML closed (14/10) Newton Abbot - Dawlish

The bus I ended up on came up from Truro so shows how far the call had gone out. But at the current rate of progress it's going to take a while to shift the backlog of passengers. Let's hope things can improve later as drivers sober up and so on. Unfortunately for me the bus missed 12:51 from...
