Fare Evasion Advice

Hi everyone, I'll try and keep it short and any advice would be greatly appreciated. A year or so ago I was stopped at Manchester Piccadilly as I bought my ticket after I left the train and I in fact bought an incorrect ticket for a shorter distance. Not that I have to convince anyone but...
