Oyster maximum fare for a long journey?!!!

Hi I'd like some of your words of wisdom on this scenario: Yesterday evening around 8pm I boarded a train from Waterloo to Clapham Junction where I was to change for a fast train to Twickenham. I tapped in at Waterloo with about £7 on my card, got on my train, arrived at Clapham junction...
