Break of journey on outward Off Peak Return

I was planning on travelling Penrith to Inverness using an off-peak return ticket and breaking my outward journey overnight in Edinburgh. Trainline's customer service team said that this could be done, but speaking to Scotrail (as a belts and braces confirmation) they said that it could not...
