Got caught at a station without a ticket? whats going to happen?

I recently boarded at preston station to find my details being taken down because I hadnt baught a ticket on the train. I'm finding the whole situation quite frustrating as I believe it's not my fault I don't have a ticket. The station I board at has NO ticket booth, it's just a tiny station...
