    Red/white switch thingies underneath platforms

    What are these? For years I've seen them dotted around under the platforms at Acton Main Line, Ealing Broadway and West Ealing stations. When I was an ickle one, I used to think "If 'up' means the platform is level, then 'down' must mean everyone falls onto the track". :oops:
