I'd like to apologise to fellow passengers on this 159 from Exeter for being a single person occupying a table - I know this is annoying.

This is because for some reason, all of the airline seats on in this and the next carriage are facing backwards !

Why do train companies do this.
That doesn't seem normal. Surely they've not crammed in more seats on an already tight interior, so I wonder why they've done that.

Why should anyone apologise for being a single person sitting at a table? Or were you really somehow occupying the whole of the table despite being just one person?

To be fair, a bloke did sit diagonally opposite me, which was good as I felt less self conscious.

I don't understand why they don't just reverse half of the airline seats from one of the bays. I don't think it would affect capacity.

Nothing wrong with 700, they're the right kit for the job. The seating is just personal preference.
The fact that work is being done to the seats to try and increase their comfort is proof that the majority of users don't like them as they are, otherwise what's the point in doing the work?

On the seating layout in the 159s, what's the top speed where the end carriages having all seats being rear-facing when its the front of the train? I wondered if that could be why the 159 seating layout is like that, but I'd have thought their 90mph top speed is low enough not to require it.

There is no change with the seating layout, just new cushions/covers. I suspect the planned change to downgrade first class to be 2+2 seating in a smaller area simply got binned as costing too much money.

The only area where I think where most of the seats face the same way is within the 52 coach, but even in that coach, one side faces towards the toilet, the other side faces towards 1st class.

This is strange. Perhaps my train was the result of an odd unit reform.

There aren't any mixed unit reforms on SWR 15X.

As has been mentioned, the units have a fairly 50/50 split of seats in both directions.

I'll check when possible for a refurbished coach with all seating in one direction.
