There is a balancing act (and the first two parenting looked so different back then that it's not even comparable really). Those three changed the world (and were away for far less long I might add). Bushby hasn't and nor was there any prospect of it.
Drake also had no children, rather famously.

Crumbs, have you not heard that there are many, many fathers who abandon their children for far lesser reasons than this?

Then they'll put their children through hell by arguing and fighting with their former partners - I don't think Bushby is guilty of that.

And while you might love to pour scorn on his achievements, a great many people are inspired by what he's done.

Should Columbus, Drake, Shackleton and even more modern explorers have not done what did, preferring to bring up families?
It doesn’t matter what your reason is, this one is no better than any other standard deadbeat dad.

Where in earth have you got this wide-eyed uncritical fanboy opinion of this self-centred nonentity?
Ha ha, I appreciate your wit. I think :s.

I also appreciate people like Ellen MacArthur, who didn't need to sail around the world solo, and Mark Beaumont, who didn't need to cycle around the world.

Personally I find their ability to challenge their limits to be admirable. I also feel inspired by people like Michael Palin. He didn't need to travel the world (several times), and you might consider that he wasted a great deal of fuel in doing so. But I do enjoy his stories about it all.

Conversely, I'm not a fan of football, where the big clubs buy in players from nowhere near the towns and cities they play for, just to kick a ball around a field, and then sometimes cheat their way to the top.

Neither am I a fan of Musk, who spends vast amounts of money on projects such as hyperloop and flying cars, which we know are nothing more than for pure vanity with zero chance of practical uses.

Why don't you criticise him when there are millions of people who would welcome more meaningful transport investment with the money he wastes?

Each to their own I guess, but I prefer my respect to go to those who challenge the limits of human endeavour. Which many others admire - aside from yourself and a few others on this thread.

Perhaps you should go to Hull when Bushby arrives home soon, and hold a placard telling him how his time could have been better spent? :D

There would be a certain irony in spending time doing that

None of your other examples abandoned their children* to do what they did.

*Musk may have abandoned one of them, but for unrelated reasons
