Northern Advance ticket question - will miss my connection, what're my options?

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can provide a quick answer on what my best option is to complete my journey?

I was meant to be changing onto the 1648 Northern service from Manchester Piccadilly to Barrow, but my inbound XC service is running late and I'm going to miss it. I have a 'Northern only' advance. The next Northern service is not until 1848 but there is a TPE at 1726 (then change at Lancaster).

Am I allowed to board this? I would assume I can't, but I'm never sure what cross-operator ticket acceptance there is when you're journey's been disrupted?

Just seen this, sorry no-one replied. What happened? I'd have asked the XC guard to advise re. getting the TPE connection. It seems reasonable rather than a two hour delay, and I believe the understanding is that for any delay over an hour you're supposed to be able to get another operator's service to mitigate the wait, although I'm never quite sure how official this is.

You can get the next Northern service, but not automatically from a different operator. However Northern/TPE/LNER have a mutual acceptance agreement so you would have been fine using the 17:26 TPE.

See https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...ip-to-keep-customers-moving-during-disruption

LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express will allow customers to travel on each other's services during any short-notice or on-the-day cancellations.
However this may not technically apply because there is no cancellation of a Northern/TPE service, so best to ask first.

As XC caused you a delay exceeding 60 minutes you could have asked XC to re-route you onto the TPE under your PRO rights. This would have probably been refused because the train companies don't like to follow their obligations in these situations. But then you could have bought a ticket and complained to XC to seek a refund of the amount paid for their unlawful refusal of re-routing.

Thanks for all the replies. I did ask the XC guard (subsequently after posting on here). He said I should try and speak to the TPE staff at the back of the train and see if they'd let me on, but also stressed that it wasn't certain they would as technically my ticket wouldn't be valid for it.

My concern with that was even if the TPE staff at Piccadilly allowed me on, some later onboard inspector (say there's a staff changeover or something) might challenge me over not having a valid ticket.

I knew about the TPE/Northern ticket acceptance deal but thought that was only if your train had been cancelled (which in this case it wasn't, just a missed connection).

In the end I just waited 2h for the next Northern service, to be totally sure, which actually wasn't too much of an inconvenience.

Delay Repay claim from XC? What can legitimately be claimed? The cost of the travel on XC plus the Northern advance? But has the OP intentionally delayed themselves by waiting for the 1848?

Yes, the full cost of both tickets.

But has the OP intentionally delayed themselves by waiting for the 1848?

No, there is nothing* in place allowing them to use another TOC for a missed connection, only for a cancellation. This is silly and will no doubt be fixed at some point, but is how it is now.

* Other than PRO rights but we know TOCs don't honour those so the only way to get them is generally to buy a new ticket and threaten legal action to refund it.

The OP travelled on the next service for which their ticket was valid. They did not intentionally delay themselves. They should claim from XC.
