Last free sample I was offered a couple of years ago in a shop (not at a station) was a copy of The Sun "news"paper - which I refused...........

I've never been offered a free sample of anything when travelling by train. Not even alcohol-free beer. I'm feeling a bit gutted now. :'(

I remember when Mars ice creams were new they were being given out at Waterloo. A large group of french kids were given one each, and somehow didn't appreciate that they were ice creams, rather than cold regular mars bars - so put them in their bags to eat later.

On Tuesday it looked like there was a Tim Tams stand being wheeled into Bristol Temple Meads station.
I think it’s an Australian copy of a penguin biscuit?
Shame I couldn’t hang around and find out!

It was originally made with the aim of "making a better Penguin", but don't ever compare the two in front of an Australian; I learnt that one the hard way... It has a bit more of a kick to it than a Penguin and I'm not quite sure what the flavour is but they are quite nice. Unfortunately they don't come with a joke on the wrapper.

I used to get loads of freebies when commuting into Waterloo and even Bank, in the mid-2000s.
Lately though, it does seem to have dried up, at least at Marylebone and Liverpool St, which are the terminals I visit most often.
There was a group giving out either some sort of energy drink or protein bar outside Liverpool St a couple of months ago, but not to my taste.

One tip at Liverpool St, around lunchtime, if you go down the arcade towards M&S, one of the restaurants there is often giving away small free samples to tempt you inside.

I got one of those special chocolates on the last day Virgin Trains were operating (even got it at Penrith station). Not planned, just a complete coincidence I happened to be having a day trip that day. Kept it as a souvenir of sorts.
