I do wonder if ZP will throw in the towel after he almost certainly loses the by election this week as it gives him an easy out. I gather that his attempts to amend the motion into something less unhinged were rejected by even greater margins than the motion itself - a truly dire situation

Is it problematic for the SDLP or Sinn Fein to say Northern Ireland shouldn't exist?

We are allowed to think countries ought to exist or not exist, as a fundamental principle.
We can think what we want about whatever topic we want. But it's ultimately a question of self-determination and I would ask why we think we have the right to tell other people what they should do.

It's fine for Sinn Fein and the SDLP to have views about the existence of Northern Ireland because they are political parties in Northern Ireland who represent people who live there. The future of Ireland is for the people of the island of Ireland to decide. Likewise, the future of Israel and Palestine is for Israelis and Palestinians to decide.

As far as I can see the idea of a shared single state is a non-starter, never seriously entertained by either side in the conflict. If they wanted that, it would have been formed in the 1930s or 1940s. The Palestinian government itself is in favour of a two-state solution, which makes the GPEW policy rather an odd one. Who are they to tell the Palestinians what they should do?

I agree it's incredibly bizarre and unhelpful, and revealing that this is a priority for them.

All I can say - did the Greens not have any checks in place for vetting their members who put forward motions?

The Green Party member behind the recent “Zionism is racism” motion has links to an al-Qaeda terrorist serving jail time in the US.

It has emerged that the member behind the motion, Lubna Speitan, was described in US court documents as a “close friend” of an al-Qaeda terrorist who plotted to carry out a suicide bomb attack at Heathrow Airport.

Ms Speitan offered to give evidence in defence of Minh Quang Pham, a UK citizen jailed for 40 years in the US for supporting al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in 2011.

Pham admitted three counts of terrorist-related activity based on his support for the group,

Asked whether she remained friends with Pham, Ms Speitan reportedly said: “Yes, it’s still the case,”

A former supporter of Jeremy Corbyn's new party, Your Party, which the ex-Labour leader launched in 2025, she told Palestine Deep Dive she switched her allegiance to the Greens because of Your Party's infighting and the Greens' relative stability, which meant the latter was better placed to further her anti-Zionist aims.
