Odd short platform details announced at Stevenage for passengers alighting at Cambridge

The platform screens and announcements at Stevenage for the 18:29 12 coach Thameslink train to Cambridge this evening had an odd addition to the information about stations with short platforms.

Baldock and Ashwell & Morden both have 8 coach platforms so passengers are advised to travel in the front 8 coaches.

However today the platform screens and announcements also advised passengers for Cambridge to travel in the front 10 coaches ! Is there a reason for this ?
The train terminates at Cambridge normally in platforms 7 or 1 (occasionally 8) all of which accommodate 12 coach trains.

This particular service terminates at Platform 4 at Cambridge before heading to the sidings. I assume it must be something to do with this despite the fact that Platform 4 AFAIK can indeed accommodate a 700/1.

I think this is a minor quirk of history.

When class 700s first ran to Cambridge, in 2018, only platforms 1, 7 and 8 were long enough for a class 700/1. Platform 1 was lengthened for 12 cars in 2009, platforms 7 and 8 were 12 cars from new. But, in 2018, platform 4 was not long enough for a 12 car class 700.

Platform 4 was lengthened later as part of the introduction of class 720s. Making platform 4 long enough for a 10 car class 720 also made it long enough for a 12 car class 700.

9S46 1644 Brighton-Cambridge is booked to terminate in platform 4 and go to the sidings. I use this train occasionally and I think this has only been happening since December 2025.

On the same point, we were on 1B68 0812 Manchester-Cleethorpes a week last Sunday. On arriving at Sheffield at the north end of P1 (by running down the centre road and across the crossover), the conductor announced that the doors of one of the six coaches wouldn't open (I forget if it was the front or the back, but we were in the front coach which was platformed and I can't believe the rear one was still on the crossover). Is it because of the work going on near the end of P1?
