Does anyone know if the

Freedom of the North West (4 in 8 Day) rover ticket is valid on trains that start at Carlisle before 0900 that travel to Barrow-in-Furness (direct, apart from the Whitehaven shuffle due to tunnel works) or is it just valid from intermediate stations.

The blurb says the restriction does not apply between Carlisle and Barrow, but do not know if its only intermediate stations or the full line?

Thanks

(Sorry for bold... no idea how it got there so no idea how to get rid of!)

@LP007. Good question! I'd say that travelling on, say, the 0859 Northern service from Carlisle to Whitehaven, midweek, was o.k.

It includes validity from Barrow and from Carlisle along the Cumbrian Coast line (only) pre 9am.

Does anyone think I can get the 0807 (weekday) service boarding from Carlisle to Whitehaven (which I assume went to Barrow before the tunnel closure.) As that would have usually been direct, or was that always terminated at Whitehaven, therefore not a direct service?
Thanks

Yes.

From the GB Rail Rover Guide - here:

time restrictions
Mon to Fri: valid from 09:00 but valid anytime between Carlisle and Barrow in Furness and from Lockerbie to Carlisle
No restrictions at weekends or public holidays

Similarly, from the Northern Trains website here

Time Restrictions

Rail Rover tickets are available for travel on trains timed to depart after 09:00, Mondays to Fridays and at any time at weekends and bank holidays. The following exceptions apply:

  • North Country and North West Rovers are valid on the Cumbrian Coast line (Barrow-in-Furness - Carlisle via Whitehaven) at any time.
  • North West Rovers are valid from Lockerbie to Carlisle at any time.

Perfect! Thanks!
Just the NR website implied it may have been from intermediate stations only, rather than the full route!
Let my trip planning commence!!!

The 0807 was a through Barrow train before the tunnel work, yes. Currently it is one of the missing links with no service south of Whitehaven.

I use the FONW frequently very early from Whitehaven to either Carlisle or Barrow. You can even use the 0550 or 0706 from Carlisle which do have Barrow connections. The 0550 is a Sellafield workers train but is nothing like as busy as it used to be before the disruption.

I don't think it needs to be an actual direct service, the wording is confusing and really just means that you can't travel before 09:00 if you go via Lancaster. In other words the easement only applies to use of the Cumbrian Coast line and not any other lines used to get between Carlisle and Barrow.

By the way, if travelling the Cumbria Coast Line be wary of the last train north-the 2110 from Barrow then 2148 replacement bus to Workington.

There has been a lot of road resurfacing work going on, blocking the road the bus takes. When that happens the bus runs non stop from Millom to Workington via the A590. M6 and A66 omitting all intermediate stations. There is never an advance word of that on the stations, so check journey planners carefully. I've been inconvenienced by that 4 times now, having to travel back earlier or via Carlisle.
In theory Northern should provide a taxi, but good luck with that, as you wait for ever while one is sourced from goodness knows where. They don't have any local contracts. One time (before the tunnel work) I had to wait at Millom late at night for well over 2 hours while a taxi was sent up from Manchester!

Also tickets are never checked on the replacement Whitehaven to Corkickle bus at any time of the day.
